I can understand why I get called the 'Linux commie' sometimes. No I dont think it's wrong to earn money at all. But if I ran a telco I would be more concerned with providing a good service than my next paycheck or holiday in Fiji. Some will disagree, but I believe when you love your work you never work a day in your life.

I'm suggesting building a big lan, on top of which the users will be able to get access to telephone like services - VOIP.
However, the people in this community feel that Telecom should be delivering them service.

Oh, I agree. Really she doesn't earn that much in the global side of things. If I leave any reference to the issue in my stuff I think I'm going to just change it to "CEO - Telecom" as well, because I don't have any issue what so ever with TG, wouldn't know here from a bar of soap and I'm told she's very impressive. I can also fully understand any number of the issues she faces... infact if I was her right now I'd be thanking me for even suggesting this idea, it gives her more ability to help these people if she can justifity why Telecom should step up....
However back on topic of earning... My issue is that while we have people in the IT sector earning millions of dollars we also have people who are getting a third rate service and people who just can't afford the services at all. That earks me because as you can see from my costings, it is possible to deliver data to customers for much less... but again, that's not anything to do with her. Her job is to do what she's doing... isn't it? Jama: Don't forget also that a chunk of her renumeration is linked to share options so recently with the share price in free fall she has actually had a pay cut.

However, given these 5,000 New Zealanders you're talking of... why is it that my customers and friends in Rocking Horse Road can't get ADSL some 7 years after Telecom started installing it in NZ? Jama: NZ'ers are also very loyal to Vodafone so does the same argument apply there as well?

Jama: I actually think that we are an apathetic lot. We moan and groan but do not change providers when the opportunity presents itself. The domestic airline industry is a classic example.

Having said all this.... if having pointed out all this information, no one in Rocking Horse Road steps up to get the service installed then I'm all happy to tell everyone including Telecom, Telstra and Vodafone...
I know that Telecom is called to task by everyone from the PM down. I'm more than happy for them to be able to step and tell HC to get back in her box if the NZ public choose to be apathetic.
Right now I'm calling on you guys as industry players to run your eyes over what I've written and give comment if you can think of things that might help get this community service.
I talked to a guy on the phone this afternoon... who made the comment (after having looked over my web site) that when Satrun turned up in Wellington "Telecom dropped their trouses" (or some words to that effect). If Telecom choose to do that in RHR by rolling out ADSL in the next couple of weeks and giving the locals such a deal that makes my proposal worthless then I'll get back to the business of helping my customer get their new business (dream) a reality rather than spend my time copping personal abuse on lists.

If you are proposing microwave backhaul then dont expect ISM 5.8 or 2.4ghz spectrum to be suitable. CHCH is one of the worst places for ISM spectrum congestion apart from Albany in Auckland.

Yes, I know it's issue. I'm not provisioning that bit. It will be done by someone who I assume has spectrum, they're a commerical provider.
As for the wifi 2.4... I 100% agree with everyone who takes pains to point out that it was never intended for long haul.
I propose a range of less than 100m before you put in a bridge on a new channel.

I would suggest 5.3GHz point to point gear then, something like a Trango Atlas. 9 degree beam width from memory and with all the advantages you get in 5.3 of the lower power restrictions. Over 100m you should be able to use full QAM 64 modulation for 45mbps throughput.
The other alternative may be free space optical equipment.

However yes, you're right. I've talked to the importers about this gear. It's price point is still to high.
Having said this, my intention is to do field tests and see how we go. If 2.4 works in the area then good, if it doesn't then we rethink.
It's only a small area after all. It's not hard to just suck and see a bit. :)
Did you also notice that I'm planning on linking homes with cat5e?
