FYI Smith was not founding CEO of Xtra - Chris Tyler was. Smith took over about a year after Xtra launched.

Well, not many people would automatically consider TelstraClear for broadband. They have a large branding and public relations problem there, but no real inclination to fix that. I mean, they could but check out the TCL PDQ commercial on TV. Does that tell you to get TCL broadband? No? There you go then. :)

I just read an article on Stuff about an upcoming upgrade to the Sothern Cross cable that carries the majority of NZ international internet traffic. In the article they mention that it costs $1-$2 per GB to send traffic over the cable so a 40GB cap where most of the traffic is international could be costing the Telco $40+ just for the international traffic. There is currently no compitition in this area so these prices are not going to come down any time soon.

Perhaps this is what is behind the need for caps and the high price of access.

That's certainly what REANNZ is saying... another problem is the long-term contracts (the story speaks of SCC signing up Aussie providers until 2015). Means providers locked in on high prices that don't reflect current lower rates.

I was on Saturn cable with Chello until they axed it (with very short notice).
Subsequently went onto Paradise Cable. Moved house once, new place had cable no problems.
Moved house again - no cable - no plans to add it in that area (Belmont Lower Hutt).

Just going to ring them now and check if that's changed, but as far as I know they stopped doing any expansion a few years ago.. :(

A couple of points. Access to TCL cable would be one of the key factors for me when buying a house

One of the reasons I would never move to Auckland(!)

When I moved into my current place, which is on a subdivided section, I confirmed that TCL would run cable from the pole on the street down my driveway (about 30m) to the house before I made an offer on the house. I was expecting just a cable drop from the pole but since all my services are underground, but they did not want to dig up the driveway, they ran all the cables in a conduit on the side of the driveway, and then once it reached the house, pushed the cables under the driveway to reach the house

Their IVR is okay since now you can now say "Fault" "Internet" "Paradise" while it's prattling on and get straight to the right queue

JAMMAN2110: Ok so some people don't mind if we have datacaps, I accept that. But honestly I find it (this is my personal opinion and may not match with yours, not my problem either) utterly ridiculous to put data limits on what is supposed to be the information superhighway.

In my opinion:
Data caps are bad
Throttling is bad

And no one can deny that removing both those things would do great things for the country.

Personally I dont like having to drive at below 100k/h on motorways. However most users probably dont mind this and are not willing to spend large amounts of money on an autobahn for people like me :)

If you do not want data caps then you end up with more expensive Internet charges for everyone which is basically subsidising faster access for the few who use it. As NZBNW says 'user pays' is fairer for everyone.

If (my opinion again, yes) we want to move into VoIP instead of phones, IPTV... etc then caps and throttling is going to kill us all. If you have a heart condition and anger management issues it may literally kill you :P

These services would not be capped or count towards a data cap if they are from the ISP you are purchasing the date service off. If you think about this its like Telecom saying you can only make 100 minutes of toll calls a month when toll calls are their bread and butter :)

If you get VoIP services or IPTV services from a 3rd party then thats a different story, its treated no differently from any other Internet traffic because it actually is no different from the ISPs point of view (baring any QoS considerations).

Of course Telecom owns half of the Southern Cross Company and the CEO is ex NZ Telecom management. They "say" it costs $1-$2 per gig. I do not trust these figures from Southern Cross any more than Telecom for obviouse reasons. I am surprised people are so quick to believe these figures including the media (actually not surprised there).

Streaming Radio across the net is already here (according to the latest telecom add) and Streaming TV and legit movie downloads etc are just around the corner (well actually here), so the 2 gig you use or the so called 4 gig "average" Telecom states is woeful for the "average" person in the immediate future.

I do not believe true unlimited flat rate can exist here in NZ, but I firmly believe we are currently being ripped a new one by Telecom and Southern Cross Cable.

Given the amount of data that is moved across that cable I would expect that those figures aren't to much off the mark.

You want the price to go down then we have to start moving some real data.

That won't happen untill we can get data to and from users.

Now here's an interesting point: the cable is fully depreciated and abble to make money. South X wants to add a new cable.

This will cost real money, because a real boat with real sailors is used. So any new cable will need to be really depreciated.

Upshot? costs for intl. traffic will go up....

Now, a real money-earner would be if Soth X stopped all the spam/worms/viris's etc at LA instead of clipping the tcket and sending it along.

Imagine that.... most of the traffic demanded is real traffic, and we don't need an upgraded cable because only real traffic is sent to nz rather than viagra prescriptions.....

Here at BubbleLandInternet (BLI) we actually did a deal with the spammers, we introduce the spam into the network at our end, that way they don't have to pay for local access. They just send us there spam DVDs in the bottom of cans of baby milk formular on Amerian Airlines flights from SFO.

Does raise the intersting idea of isp's hosting an email server in the states and doing geographic dns loading. I seem to remember reading somewhere that some customised dns servers can give out different IP's depending on the source of the query. Anything coming from the states can be filtered at the states end and then passed on to the primary server.

Whether they'll do it or not is another question though. LOL.
