Cymro: Telecom offers a Static IP free on it's best value $$$/data package (Total Home Broadband)
http://www.telecom.co.nz/packages/packages/plansandpricing/totalhomebroadband

That doesn't sound to bad - Is there variation in the speed, whether its true or not I swapped from Telecom to Orcon a few years back and pretty sure it was faster?

Zeon: List of ISPs whom I think offer static IPs and corresponding charges (my guess):

Vodafone: $20/month
Slingshot: $10/month
Snap: $?
Orcon: $?
Xnet: $10/month
Telecom: $10/month
Unleash: Free

This is only guesses so best to research yourself

Thanks

well my Snap static ip is free but it looks like they may have started charging for them now according to that link. I do remember something about it being free depending on which plan you are on but that was ages ago and they have different plans now. Best talk to them if you want to be 100% sure.

Not right I'm afraid - where did you get that number? It's either $20.45 or free, depending on your plan.

Heh - that's been tried and it's a catastrophe.

Warning - Many people believe that much of the information on that site is very very inaccurate.

michaeln: You're running a DNS server at home?

I can't see how that question is pertinentn.

There are very few reasons these days to actually REQUIRE a static IP address. DNS server is the canonical one.

Statically configured VPNs is a common reason. IMHO it usually indicates poor design, but arguing that is not going to be helpful to the OP, so I'll grant that he needs a static IP address.

Depends where you are measuring speed to be honest.

Sync speed on Orcon may appear a bit higher as they use lower margin settings than Telecom (Telecom use a very conservative 12dB).

If your planning on living in the same house for a fair period of time why bother with hunting out an ISP that does static IP's just stay with orcon and give the company your new IP... Despite the fact you'll have an dynamic IP it shouldn't change unless asked for by you or done because you've changed a) Address, b) ISP's , I've had several plan changes in the same house but never a new IP until I went Ph line and BB all with orcon and that was only because Orcon cocked it up

Do we know Orcon uses Sticky IP's? If they use a standard dynamic IP then the IP could change each time the modem authenticates. Even if Orcon do use Sticky IP's it will still change every now and again. I doubt the OP is going to make any friends by having to get his company to change their record of his IP each time it changes.

Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.

At least for me Orcon is static (Not paying extra) - Telecom I know refreshed (Last I used it couple of years ago) with a modem restart, my current IP has not changed in over a year, and 2 years before I moved house.

A number of ISP's are using sticky IP's now as it makes complying with the s92 law a lot easier.

I can think of a few convenient reasons to have a sticky IP as a consumer. I just could not tell from Athlonite's post if he was sure they were using Sticky IP. Nate1's own experience suggests they do and it changes very infrequently. Given this Athlonites suggestion seems to be the easiest option unless Nate1 wants to look at alternative providers for other competitive reasons.
