If the modem reset, that would most likely flag as a disconnect at the ISP end.

Thought so.

Ive now got filters on everything plugged into the phone line, should I keep the one on the modem there or get rid of it?

You should not have a filter on the modem at all - just everything else.

The best filter is a master one wired in, so you have a dedicated outlet for your modem.

Modem has no filter. Everything else does. What happens at midnight. The modem still resets.

If the disconnect is cause by Sky / AC box / alarm / whatever, and it is wired up to "grab" the phone line at the expense of everything else, the only way a filter will help is if it is a wired in master filter/splitter, where the DSL line comes off prior to where the offending device is wired in.

I had this exact problem several years ago, and the tech that had installed the master filter had put it after the line grabber for the alarm - it disconnected at exactly the same time every day, cutting off everything else. It needs to be the first device on the line as it comes from the demarc.

So, just having plugin filters on everything may reduce the impact of DSL noise on those devices, but it is unlkely to have much of an effect on your regular disconnect.

I'd suggest you need to do some testing several nights in a row, and keep records of how everything was set up each night - e.g. One night with nothing but your modem plugged in, next night, plug the sky box in as well, see ehat happens. Then add the AC box, see what effect this has.... and so on.

Plug in filters just dont work in some cases with some devices. Some are better than others too which leads people to believe that their filter has "gone faulty" when they swap it out and another one works better.

get a proper installation done and see if the problems persist.

Decided to unplug the AC Nielsen thing last night and both last night and tonight it hasnt disconnected so the theory of it grabbing the DSL line is probably right

Some modems have what they call a 'self healing' facility apparently - I learnt this recently.

This marvellous feature is basically a regular reboot to 'fix' any little faults.
Have you logged into the modem and had a look to make sure there isnt such a feature enabled.
I seem to recall you could set it for some sort of interval.

Excellent - making good progress!

I'd suggest now having a decent look at the wiring setup for it, and establish if it is wired up to grab the line (i.e. everything else connects through it, and it can cut them off), or if it is just putting so much noise on the line that the DSL signal can't cope.

Either way, the best solution would be a master filter, so you have a dedicated DSL jackpoint, with the rest of the phone wiring now isolated from it.

Alternatively, you may be able to play around with the way things are plugged in using individual filters, so that the DSL modem is plugged in before the AC box - this would probably resovle the disconnect issue, but would be an inferior solution to a properly installed master filter.

If you can establish where the demarc is for your house (where the phone line first comes in from the road), and you are moderately skilled with wiring, then it wouldn't be too hard to install a master filter yourself. Otherwise, I think Chorus charge about $200, or depending on your location, there are several people on GZ who would be able to do it for you as well...

And that is why I tried it as soon as I got back from holiday... 1 midnight with everything plugged in to see problem is still ongoing, and 2 more with the scanner unplugged to confirm it is that

It's actually not that big of a deal, maybe if it was the mysky or a monitored alarm it would be. AFAIK it only needs to pass over data 2 or 3 times a week

Try a different plugin filter on it if you insist on continuing to use them, as they are not all created equal.
