mattwnz:ISPs normally have a call centre operating every day including the weekend. Are you sure they are closed for 3 days? Do they have an emergency contact for when there is a service failure?

They don't have a weekend call centre. Annoyingly, they seemed to close their help desk 15 minutes early on Friday afternoon when I was trying to call them. Being on hold for this time out me over my monthly allowance of minutes on vodafone. Their 0800 number rejects mobile calls, so sitting on hold costs money as I had to dial an 09 number.

Anyway, this problem has brought out the geek in me. I've set up a mobile WiFi hotspot at home using my iPhone. I'm still on a legacy plan with vodafone that gives me 3 GB per month. This should last the weekend.

I need to correct myself. Hosting Direct do indeed have an emergency weekend service. Stay on the line and press 9.

According to the service guy, there is additional provisioning that still needs to be done. They are looking into the issue, much to their credit considering it's a long weekend.

Just got a call from Josiah from Hosting Direct, and the problem is now fixed. Not sure what he did at his end, but VDSL2 is now active. I have to say that the level of service provided by Josiah was excellent. It took around 30 minutes to troubleshoot the problem, so it wasn't easy. Thanks very much for taking time away from your long weekend to solve this issue.

About the minimum that I would expect from VDSL2: 17Mbps down and 10 Mbps up sync speeds. Line attenuation is 5 dB and I'm 600 meters from a cabinet.

Curiously enough, my ADSL line attenuation was 14.5 dB down and 7.8 dB up. Hosting Direct did a line test when I was on ADSL and informed me it was more like 5 dB. Turns out they were correct. I wonder how many people are not signing up for VDSL because the erroneously believe that their line attenuation is above the Telecom minimum standard of 11.5 dB.

This is an improvement on my previous ADSL2+ sync speeds of 12 and 0.8 Mbps.

Naked VDSL2. All extension lines were physically cut and I have a cat 5e cable from the Telecom box to a single outlet in my home office.

I also asked for interleaving to be turned off. I suppose this would have some effect on sync speed.

If it possible to get this turned off now? I know in the early days of the rollout that this wasn't ever going to be an option.

I am not 100% sure what iss what but I think your rates are too low. I had heard minimum install speeds were 25mbit. IE if you couldn't get over that, they wouldn't install. I believe something is hinky with your wiring, I had a nail through the newly installed cable and was only getting 25, they reran the cable and I went to 70Mbit from 440M from the exchange.

So the problem was at their end in the end?

Did the screenshots I sent help?

I asked for interleaving to be turned off also, but was told by James at HD that Chorus are not currently allowing it.

Good to hear you have got it sorted. A pity chorus don't have vdsl in my area in wellington yet according to the maps.
