Hi Folks,

Just signed up for the Hosting Direct GZ special for 100 GB per month on VDSL2 a few days ago, and purchased a ZyXEL P870H-51a v2 modem. I'm having trouble with the settings, so if some kind soul can help out, I would be grateful.

I have entered the following parameters:

PPPoE
MTU 1452 (is this a typo on the HD web site?)
PPP Username: *****@adsl.hd.net.nz
PPP Password: *********
PPoE Service Name? (not sure what to add here, of if it is important)
Authentication Methods: Auto
Enable NAT, Symmetric NAT
Obtain DNS info from WAN server

Acording to the Hosting Direcet help desk this should be enough to be assigned my static IP address, but no such thing happens.

All of this happens at the start of the long weekend, so as well as having to now use mobile broadband for the next three days, I'm without a telephone as my VoIP system isn't connected anymore. (I suggested to the kids we spend quality time together instead of internet time, or maybe watch TV like folks used to do hundreds of years ago).

Anyone else use this modem with Hosting Direct?

Cheers,

David.

No and unfortunately because it's past 5pm I won't be able to provide you too much help, but I can give you the settings from my Zyxel for Unleash and you can see if those will help. I am around in the weekend with some delays if I can assist. PM me.

Cheers

You'll need to setup the PPPoE authentication on VLAN 10. Have a look at "Layer 2 Interface" under WAN settings. Looks like you can setup the VLAN there.

The Layer 2 Interface panel gives me the option to select MSC mode or VLAN MUX mode, but it appears to revert back to MSC mode when saving the configuration. The only other option in this panel is QoS, which apparently can't be turned off.

Try removing the WAN service (PPPoE settings) then remove the interface and re-add it using VLAN Mux Mode. You should then be able to specify the VLAN when you setup the PPPoE.

Thanks for this. I saw it in the manual at the same time as your message came through. Still no assigned IP address.

Sorry, probably can't help much more. Using a Draytek here and Zyxel's are off-site in bridged mode, so can't fiddle with settings remotely.

I've sent my unleash settings for my Zyxel, but he is only syncing at 17Mbit from 600M from the exchange, I am of the opinion it's somewhat likely that he has been accidentally connected to a ADSL2 port. I had this exact same problem initially. Turned out the tech didn't have any idea of VDSL and thought it was a typo.

Obviously not 100% that this is the case, but it seems strange.

I am pretty sure that the settings I have sent him will largely be the same except his username and password.

Thanks for your help and suggestions. I guess the only thing left is to wait patiently for next Tuesday when Hosting Direct open up shop after the long weekend. I don't believe I can contact Chorus directly about this.

Cheers,

David.

Sorry for your trouble, it's a shame no response in the weekend from HD.

You didn't get a call from Chorus to confirm your setup was complete? If you had that number you could potentially let them know it's not working and they MIGHT reinvestigate.

Nope, no such call from Chorus.

Yep, the DSL and the Internet light are both on. I can see what my line sync is, but no IP is issued.

Have you got a plain old ADSL modem that you could plug in to test networkn's theory? Might get you up and running on ADSL for the weekend at least.

Tried that earlier this evening. Didn't work.

ISPs normally have a call centre operating every day including the weekend. Are you sure they are closed for 3 days? Do they have an emergency contact for when there is a service failure?
