TelstraClear: You may like to consider the independent Truenet results. Truenet stated in its 6 Jan 2012 news release:

"TelstraClear Cable remains the best performer compared to all ADSL suppliers."

Truenet's testing is unrealistic. They test single page loads, wait for the speed to ramp up, and and various other "issues".

Also they are testing a web page that is in I think Wellington. When most people browse international sites like Facebook.

TelstraClear's facebook performance hasn't been amazing with multiple periods of time of "issues" like facebook chat not coming up properly - even though it was working on other ISP's.

New Zealand still lacks any realistic benchmarking of real web browsing and interactive performance.

You "think", so you are not sure how the test works? Truenet use a "well peered" server in Wellington, plus an overseas service. The

This happens if you are not using their DNS - which cause problems with web sites making heavy use of CDNs with New Zealand or internal net cache. This includes Facebook and YouTube. Check your DNS.

There's Epitiro (a client on your PC, not the best idea) and Truenet (hardware-based sensors, independent from your PC, the best approach).

What should be a realistic benchmark of real web browsing and interactive performance in your opinion?

Not that I'm agreeing with your statement, but if I just accept the premise for the sake of discussion, why?

I have a Truenet at home, I have it behind my router running TomatoUSB and have checked out/monitored what it does just out of geek interest.

I think people in general and Telstraclear marketing should be careful about making grand statements based on Truenet results.

We're still talking about a limited number of tests from a limited number of people running Truenets on Telstraclear.

It's a useful tool for highlighting problems but it doesn't test very many sites and probably never will (until we're all on un-metered plans).

Any benchmarking will always be limited to whatever sites/services are being tested thus the conclusions about performance should also be limited to those sites/services imo.

It's certainly better than nothing and a bit more open then Epitrio but not much.
