networkn: I am just struggling how Auckland CBD won't get UFB until perhaps sometime next year. How can that seriously be? It's the financial capital of New Zealand?

UFB is a 10yr rollout, with the focus being initially on business/schools/medical. The vast majority of residential customers in NZ won't see fibre for at least 5 years - this has been the plan since the UFB project was announced.

Well I *AM* a business :) I couldn't care less if Mom and Pop have Fibre! I want cost effective Fibre so I can run my business more efficiently and contribute even MORE to the tax base!

The entire country can't be magically rolled out overnight. There are already signifciant equipment and skilled labour shortages, compounded by the NBN rollout in Australia. Unlike the ~3 year TCL rollout in Wellington in the late 90's they can't just bring in skilled labour from Australia to help.

Apparently if you simply stay in Auckland Len Brown will help you do that :)

On topic though,  those prices by worldnet are very sharp, however I do wonder what the contention will be like.

I am in the same situation. They are building in a residential area in napier before they build in the CBD.
There are probably two positives for building in the residential area first - it does contain two schools and an old defunct hospital that closed down 10 years ago.

I am not saying the WHOLE country. I am saying service the income generating hubs FIRST. Surely you can understand why? I mean for the love of God, Whangerei? There are 11 people there with a combined income of $90,000! :)

I mean it's even worse than that. I am in the city fringe and I can't even get VDSL, yet in Mt Roskill where I live I can enjoy 70Mbit/10Mbit! It's DAFT!

I dont know this for sure, but i think the "oversight" of Auckland CBD not being rolled out for UFB first is due to chorus also throwing in its existing business fibre network into the ufb network too. They announced last year that existing Telecom Business Fibre customers were going to get the UFB prices immediately(?) even while they remained on the non-ufb network. Presumably they will get migrated over to UFB mid-year-ish when the ufb billing/processes/backhaul get done.

Hey don't diss us here in Whangarei!
If your local power company couldn't see the benefits of rolling out their own fibre network, like northpower did, then move.
Northpower were upgrading their own communication network long before they got the ufb contract. Having all this extra bandwidth meant that they could start offering it for sale.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Wow that would be excellent, it certainly would make more sense. I'd be interested in reference articles that back that up (Not doubting you, but rather for planning).

Just curious,  what sort of business do you run? Graphic Design? Web Design?

Presumably fibre is available to you right now, it is just v.expensive, right?

Chorus is working with a range of retail service providers to develop and launch new UFB wholesale services in the announced deployment areas in 2012.  At the same time it is opening up access to its existing business fibre areas for UFB services at significantly reduced prices and offering a wider range of services.

Chorus cut HSNS and Fibre pricing to UFB pricepoints last year.

We are a Small Business IT VAR.
Yes, I can get Fibre, if I am prepared to sign a 3 year contract with significant installation expenses and a fairly hefty monthly fee.

It's actually affordable for us, if it wasn't for the 3 year contract requirement, though it's no where near as cost effective as what has been suggested by worldnet.

that's good.

This thread just reminded me of this article from a little whileback and wanted to check whether UFB would actually be useful for you, or if you fitted the profile of the person below:

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=10762538

"Beauty salonGarden of Eve is on the southern side of Remuera Rd, and will not be included at the outset."We definitely would have a bit of a problem [with it]," said manager Sarona Fune, as fast broadband was needed for business emails and banking."
