webwat: Just heard it rehashed on the news, they said his internet slows down regularly and randomly drops. Its obviously a fluctuating noise margin, which could be line problem or house wiring. Chances are that he was advised to get a central filter installed but preferred to get some publicity for himself. I'm hoping its not a british thing??

Sounds like he got throttled and I remember him saying he was using wifi, so that probably explains the dropouts.

Oh look, turns out he was using a telecom connection that throttled down to 64k/64k after he used up the data cap..

Which leads us to:

1.He's correct in the sense that caps are strangling the economy
2.People will run for pitchforks without knowing all facts
3.Why on Earth would anyone setup a data hungry person like him on a limited entry level plan anyway?

A problem in New Zealand is only really a problem when it is happening to an overseas celebrity and he/she is telling the world about it.

I knew this was going to be about nothing.

NZ has awesome broadband, certainly better than many places all over the world including USA/Canada.

Where else can you get 70/10Mbit for $150 a month.

I haven't seen an internet problem that wasn't wiring, filtering or throttling related in quite a while.

The real question though is which two top companies would have a large enough number of customers to justify them being first movers into a large data cap (or no cap) game? And would they do this without the smaller players complaining of monopoly tactics?

To be honest I disagree. I think the real question is: What would drive the uptake of a large/no data cap game?

I don't know about businesses, there are plenty of people here who can answer that better than I.

But as a home consumer it's a video streaming service. If something like that was bundled with the kind of data cap to make HD video an option. I would pay the kind of money Sky is asking, say up to $100 a month.

To the internet gamers, would more bandwidth be a significant driver for you all?

I must say that that with all the money that floats around these Movies, it's a little surprising to me that in this industry specifically they would not have a better internet connection for these guys. To my mind they could have rented a small group of properties (Apartment complex maybe) close together and got them 1 large shared internet connection or something.....

It's a catch 22. Netflix says they won't come to New Zealand because there are caps and Sky holds rights. You say caps will be removed when demand exists...

I can't see uncapped being something that will take effect any time soon. There are some services but they are otherwise limited (speed) which means it's not suitable for HD Content on a large scale. The USA is moving away from uncapped, but the caps are pretty generous (Seriously as a home user you need more than 200GB?) and those with requirements outside that, should be prepared to pay. Personally I'd like to see the entry level plans start at 20GB, moderate plans at say 80GB and Heavy Plans at 150GB.

Also there are providers who zero rate specific traffic, when I was with Orcon, iSky wasn't added to my cap and I have Telecom / Tivo Clients who don't pay for bandwidth for that.

Partnerships are starting to form between providers of content and ISP's all the time, and it gives otherwise margin strapped ISP's another reason for customers to move.

Also addressing these issues in this medium won't get results, we need interaction with decision makers, or for those people to show themselves here (Which they won't do for fear of being mobbed and attacked).

I don't even know who the decision makers are at each organization, is it the marketing people?

See the thing is I think it all turns on what you use the GBs for.

If you just want to email and look at text websites a bit then 1GB is fine, many people who don't spend a lot of time on line do this on a 3G mobile device and all good.

If you want to download podcasts and do a bit of You-Tubing then anywhere from 5GB to 15 will be fine.

If you wanted to watch DVD quality video, and I'm talking legally thanks, then you are looking at 1GB per movie, or there about, so plans starting at 20GB, not a movie a day but close.

Blu-Ray quality is, I think, about 8GB per movie. So, a 100GB plus plan isn't looking so overboard anymore.

Chuck in VOIP, Skype and gaming and those GBs start to add up.

Personally, I think it all comes movie rights. My solution, a law change stating if you have the rights in the US you have the rights here. The artist gets paid and we get movies.

Sky gets to cry salty, salty tears. And sport of course.

That's because you are still thinking on downloading the Bluray, dare I say, by illegal means. A legal iTunes HD movie is about 2.2 GB.

That's because you are still thinking on downloading the Bluray, dare I say, by illegal means. A legal iTunes HD movie is about 2.2 GB.

And Seriously who downloads an 8GB Blu-Ray movie, before I had 70Mbit, it would have taken hours, and used a massive chunk of my cap which I pay a lot (Comparatively) for. Cheaper (and Faster) to drive to the store with a coupon and rent one for the night.
