Yeah, obviously Mr Fry hasn't done a lot of driving here.

He also took a shot at Telecom who offered him a modem stick.

He is right though, my Broadband, also with Telecom, sometimes decides not to connect/randomly drops out for no reason. Finally somebody who actually says what he is thinking, good on him.

I agree with him. I've contacted four or five ISPs in the past couple of weeks, trying to get something faster than what I have now but haven't had any luck so far. Most of them are blaming Chorus, of course...

Without knowing a lot more about his issue I don't think anybody can really comment.

Reality is 80% of NZ homes receive a minimum of 10Mbps DSL sync to the door. If you're not getting this you need to establish why - you're either outside a 10Mbps zone, your house wiring is dodgy (single biggest contributor to speed issues), or your ISP is hopeless.

I agree, ADSL upload speed in NZ is the same as ADSL upload in the UK/almost anywhere else. If you're trying to upload some HD video it'll be 'slow' regardless

Waiting for a VDSL connection, two weeks since we were supposed to go and it seems it is Chorus that is holding things up.

Yeah yeah, i bet you can go to central London or New York and have a similar problem.

One celebrity complainer is hardly representative and this is unfair to telecom but I understand the frustration of where he's coming from .

Who is providing the Internet for him? Or is it for the set? What plan? How many users? What hardware do they have routing there?

It's all strange - the problem could well be inside their offices/set.

Also, he is not saying anything new. We all know we need more action in this front.

There's RIGHT NOT a conference in Auckland called The Future With High Speed Broadband. They are streaming it live. Who is watching? Or are people just complaining and not doing anything? Who is checking their wiring to completely eliminate in-the-building problems? Who is using a decent router?

It's the holy grail because many people are not getting it today, for no fault of the provider in most cases. People who neglected to have internal wiring checked/fixed, use cheap routers with low packet switch capabilities, etc, etc, etc.

+1 - guarrantee he is in one of Sir Peter's rentals and it will have crappy wiring.

Just heard it rehashed on the news, they said his internet slows down regularly and randomly drops. Its obviously a fluctuating noise margin, which could be line problem or house wiring. Chances are that he was advised to get a central filter installed but preferred to get some publicity for himself. I'm hoping its not a british thing??

Time to find a new industry!

Reading his most recent tweets, it sounds like he exceeded his monthly data cap and was throttled back to dialup speed - hardly suprising.

(I must be one of the lucky ones, as I get ~18Mbps download speeds fairly consistently. But then again, the cabinet is <100m away from the front door)

Broadband in the UK though is no better than NZ's in terms of speed and connectivity. Perhaps he should use testra cable, if he is in wellington.
