Mmmmm. 1.5 Km from cabinet. The longest distance that Chorus would fit VDSL2 is 1.2Km. You are just too far from a cabinet. Don't think any modem is going to help much with that kind of distance.

Hio77 is right. At that sort of distance, you are probably better off with ADSL2 unless you can get fibre ...

That distance limit got changed up a bit.

On the note of distances though, Chorus put out another update today: https://sp.chorus.co.nz/product-update/predicting-vdsl-connection-speeds

Sounds like chorus are doing away with shapemaps that cause these issues to happen atlast! moving up to my dynamically actual situations.

That's about the same as me; I got a decently faster downlink speed by switching to VDSL than ADSL2. I also shopped around for a modem with a Broadcom chipset (I have a Netcomm) which was a couple of Mbps faster than the Fritzbox.

So what was your upload speed with both modems/combinations, I am more concerned with upload. Did upload improve with faster modem?

I thought ADSL2+ upload was limited to 1Mb .... I am certainly happy with my download .... but 1Mb is just not that much better than 666kb to make it worthwhile to change ..

I think the whole bandwidth of VDSL sucks as a technology ... why did they not share the lower frequencies equally between down/uplinks instead of shoving the uplink right at the upper frequencies where it is prone to attenuation ... go figure...

we live in a asymmetric world, people prefer download to upstream, the internet in itself is more download than upload for residential connections generally..

only recently with fibre are we seeing equal upload to download plans.

Until 998, vdsl actually didnt use US0 (the part of the frequency adsl uses)

now in a whole, VDSL has to play nice with adsl, so it wont in inadvertently be faster on the upstream using just that spectrum.

Sadly your US0 is a tad poor, as indicated looks to be likely of a bridgetap or multiple - which is a downfall of the copper network, it was designed for voice not DSL.

Take my rural connection (more like 2KM by the time cables are accounted for) 26/1.3 That is up from 14/1.

The interesting thing about my line is, it only uses US0, i won the lotto there i suppose...

Sadly the pair that my other adsl line has slightly stronger US0 - i'd expect even better results from that but i'm holding it off upgrading for the DLM trials.

as for the changes you asked about, no that wont help your case, the changes to DLM however likely will.

End of the day, personally i'd push back to adsl - 1mbit upload simply is not enough to handle daily life imo. if it doesnt phase you though, speed boost! and potential improvements later..

Once again though, i'd double check internal wiring for bridgetaps there, may make a massive improvement for you.

Please explain what a "bridgetap" is?, and for that matter US0?.

As I said before I have rewired my modem directly to where the line comes in the house, nothing else hangs off it ..

Push back to ADSL? But that only gives 8Mb down link from 23Mb with VDSL, and is very unlikely going to increase my uplink much .... looks like I am between a rock and a hard place.

I will wait to see if DLM (whatever it is) has any affect on my VDSL up speed ...

I will also be trying out the Zyxl VMG8324-B10A modem, as they have much better VDSL performance with the latest broadcom chipset, than the FritzBox.

Will a ZyXEL VMG8324-B10A with its fancy Vectoring technology that eliminates cross-talk or interference among different VDSL lines,

would I expect to see an improvement on a 50mb by 9mb line,

Vectoring is not available yet on the Chorus network.

Yet being the key part, in a press release yesterday chorus confirmed vectoring is playing a role in the RBI cabinet rollout.

@JeremyNzl That's close on a near perfect for expectations 8b line.

My ZyXEL VMG8324-B10A is being shipped today, I will let you know what the speeds are on my rural cabinet compared to Fritz ..

The chorus press release:

“Innovative fixed line technology choices such as vectoring will deliver even faster speeds over fixed lines, which also deliver consistent performance that does not slow down at busy times and do not require data caps to constrain use. "

Exciting times with vectoring! just watched some german youtube vids with auto translated subtitles! 100/40mb connections thanks to vectoring on a fritzbox (yes it supports it!). Bring on the changes Chorus!

My Modem is mounted 2m from the roadside etp , 500m from the cabinet. looking to squeeze everything possible from it.

The latest firmware for the Vigor 130 (3.8.1) adds vectoring support. Can confirm it did nothing to my sync rates.

Hey Guys,

I just tried out my new Zyxel modem and am more than impressed with the speed increase over the FritzBox.

I am now getting 26Mbs down, 1Mbps up, the Fritz was 23Mbps down 0.6Mbps up ... well worth the change.

I will now look forward to the vectoring to improve it further ..
