So I asked Starlink support about the Dish and Obstruction Checker...

Happy Monday! Thank you for supporting Starlink during Starlink's Beta program. Great questions. You are right. As you are in the Southern Hemisphere, your Dishy will be pointing South. As we are currently in Beta, our app by extension is also in Beta and that is why you might be experiencing the Check for Obstructions Tool pointing North. If you have any other comments or concerns, please feel free to respond back to this ticket. Enjoy the rest of your day!

So yes, the Android app is wrong, and Dishy will face south.

Oh dear... This changes things for me too. I can probably still make it work, but hard to know for sure since I don't have an iOS device to test with :(

OT: if there's one good thing to come out of the email, at least the support person didn't finish with "Have a good rest of the day!" (pet peeve)

Mine somehow made it to Christchurch, even though I'm in the North Island...  another day to wait.

Please let us know right away what response, if any, you get from Starlink support!

Here's the response I got back from Starlink support (pretty similar to response above) -

starlink:

Happy Monday! Thank you for supporting Starlink during Starlink's Beta program. Thank you for providing us with those pictures. We are currently aware that our android app is currently experiencing issues with the direction it points to. You are correct, as since you are in the Southern Hemisphere, it should be pointing towards the South. In addition, because we are still waiting for you to receive your Kit, we feel it would be best that we wait to get data directly from Dishy as it will be much more accurate. Until then, if you have any other comments or concerns, please feel free to respond back to this ticket. Enjoy the rest of your day!

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

That's the final straw for me. I don't have a practical way of getting over that hill to the south. At least I have good enough RBI for now and can revisit this in some years when they do their planned upgrade to a straight up orientation for the dish.

Thanks for passing that on.

Live in valley in SI, hills topping out at 700 meters all round, no clear view to any horizon.

Dish set it self to an angle of around 20 degrees of the horizontal, facing south.

As mentioned here Starlink NZ Performance first few days was dropping out for about a total of 1 minute (for about 15-20 seconds) over each 5 minute period, now totally fine. Fair better than any lousy offerings from NZ providers.

The ping is quite high, I guess they are still routing it via Australia?

Others may be able to confirm, but do they actually point due south or toward the angle they orbit (theres a spot top/bottom that is missed) which may help Sidney

My basic compass app suggests to align with reverse of the opposite 53Deg angle they whiz past on, it's close to 230S

I understand 25-40Deg above horizon is the norm for best angle.

My dish points due south, 180 degrees (not magnetic south). starlink.sx gives my "Point of Presence" as Sydney. Have found, on average, ping and speed better to Australia than most NZ speed tests, get up to about 190Mbps to Auckland.

Did anyone get their dishy yesterday or today? Mine is being delayed in Hamilton by the covid restrictions at NZ Post.

Looking promising thus far, just need to work on domestic ping!  But it's great for things in Australia!

Hit 262Mbps on my first test of the day, but it hovers around this mark:
