upload speed looks lower than it potentially could be.

I'd put this down to possibly any bad internal wiring or the modem chipset simply not being the best.

Assuming everything was perfect (wiring, modem chipset), what upload speed do you think might be attainable? Are we talking a slight increase in upstream speed, or significant? I'm just wondering if it's worth wasting more time/money on trying to improve the situation?

Without doing too much math (drayteks bitloading is hard to count) i'd be looking at about 3-4mbit.

Assuming there isn't a genuine reason, such as a bridge tap.

Just moved into a house I bought in Geraldine - very close to the centre of town, so only a few hundred metres from the exchange, but my VDSL connection has some sub-par line attenuation (36dB up/41dB Down) and I'm only getting 13mbit down/ 3.6mbit up line speed

House is 1950's and has one of the old style drop lines that feeds into the roof. VDSL was installed a couple years ago - well before I moved in - and I believe the cable they ran down into a dedicated jack is Cat5e. I took the face plate off all the other phone jacks in the house and clipped the line so the VDSL is the only thing using any jack point in the house. Any tips?

Just an update. Turns out some mice had gone to town on my splitter and severed one of the lines coming in. New splitter installed and went from 41dB downstream attenuation to 15dB. 10mbit before to 46.3mbit downstream rate after, and from 4mbit to 12.6mbit upstream. Pretty happy.

When i first moved these were my network speeds

after i replaced the line running from the demarcation point to the house (because my dad cut it doing some gardening) , unplugging all the unnecessary jacks expect one as im running naked VDSL with 2talk , so basically i just have two wires running from demarcation point and using new connectors these are my speeds now

just thought id share my results with the knowledge ive gleamed off this thread .

Goes to show, a little wiring work can go a long way.

2x on the downstream, 5x on upstream.

i have never seen mice go that hard of a splitter! that's insane!

But I have kept my connection to where its meant to be with the SNR tunning on my router(6db). All I could think of being the problem is the copper cables from the cabinet feeding to our houses, I suspect that they haven't been touched since the introduction of phone lines. Hopefully when vectoring gets fully released it will counter this problem.

Careful with tweaking. Particularly with ddDLM it can lead to unwanted expectations such as PSD changes rather than snr.

Well, the time has come for me to ascend to the next plane of digital existence...

My Gig fibre was installed today and now my Internet connection is no longer a bottleneck on my network (at least for downloads).

Since getting a VDSL connection ~6 years ago I have seen a 300% increase in optimised connect speeds from the same location and the connection has been very stable in general My only small complaint is that my recent interleaving was at ~11ms in total, which is not as good as previous connections where I had as low as 2ms. However, it's a small price to pay for what is otherwise 'fibre' level speeds.

My final connect stats as of this morning:

I have REALLY enjoyed tweaking, testing, learning & sharing knowledge with all of you in this thread and in some ways I am sad that there is nowhere near as much to tweak on the already pretty optimal fibre connection!

This thread is truly epic and is surely one of the, if not THE biggest and longest running threads on GZ. I am proud to have started it and glad to have traded knowledge with all of you in it.

I hereby bequeth this thread to Hio77, who has been a long term custodian for some years now and has undoubtedly contributed more to the thread than I have! No doubt hundreds of people have significantly better Internet connections because of his help. Thanks Hio77! :)

Hio77, I'm not sure if it's possible to actually take over a post (I was thinking the first post), but if not I'm always happy to make updates for you if needed.

See you all on the other side! You never know, I might just end up starting a 'Fibre Performance & Tuning' thread! :D

Gone from 70/30 to 80/30 on my VDSL, looks like something has been changed in the cabinet, any way I can get myself closer to 100Mbit ? :-)

Not too shabby for rural though!

Can't upgrade my Fitzbox anymore, it's an oldie. Cabinet is near 1364 Mangawhai Road, Mangawhai if that helps.

585v2 up the road from you seems to have G.INP.

seen one go 82/45 straight to 121/30. IFNN, so rather old modem. i don't reconize it's fingerprint. G.INP Active.

and a HG630 with G.INP active.

Suspect a new modem may be in order (or check yours just doesn't have G.INP explicitly turned off)
