barf: I'm somewhat coming out in defence of Microsoft weblordpepe; I doubt they are making money from DRM as they do not publish music or blockbuster movies, if anything DRM is costing them because of the hordes of confused, DRM-enraged geeks switching to Linux. But, the next generation of Linux-based mobile devices will have DRM too, see the LiMo platform's framework specs. DRM deserves every rotten tomato thrown at it but Microsoft are not nearly as deserving of bollocks as the Media Mafia is.

Don't forget about Apple.. Fairplay anyone?

It's very encouraging to me that both Jobs and Gates, arguably the two people in the best position to effect change, have made some fairly strong comments in recent times about their dislike of DRM. I predict that the DRM issue will bite them both in the behind: Microsoft will see worse-than-expected uptake of Windows Vista, and Apple will see the nasty side of the EU's regulatory backhand, which should keep whatever popular aversion to DRM that already exists on the table. It's certainly an issue that is not going to go away any time soon.

By the way, Brad: It's spelt R-O-G-U-E! Tongue out

What if he's actually a "red moderator"?

The DRM in Vista in nowhere near as bad as some make out. In fact it's the same as what was in Windows ME.

Read this for more info. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_vista#Criticism

Perhaps it is, I don't know. But the Gutmann paper has me scared of going anywhere near Vista.

I'm afraid to even plug my Pocket PC into Vista.

The EULA is as long as a flea's family tree. There's no way anyone can read through all of that. What if it records my serial number or something? I'm playing the ignorance card here because I genuinely don't know. I don't think I'm alone in not-knowing either.

This makes no sense. If you are afraid of connecting it, but there's an EULA, print it, read and then decide what to do. But spreading FUD without knowing the content of the text is not the best way to follow.

It's an honest opinion - I said that I'd rather not bother plugging in my PPC if it meant I had to read though a huge EULA to make sure it wasn't doing something kooky. Ya don't have to be defensive about it.

Edit: Printing a EULA? Wink

So, in my honest opinion, just put it up on Trademe and be done with it. You do not have to keep something you are not using because you are not willing to read the license terms.

Yes, print the EULA. Most software have an option to print it, otherwise you can select the whole text, paste into Notepad and print from there.

Put my PPC on trademe? We need an emoticon for off-topic.

But anyways - I'm addressing a common attitude. People would like to watch TV without a lawyer. I'd like to plug my PPC into Vista without anxiety. Granted I can always just not-buy Vista. But I'd run into a bunch of other problems like not being able to play new games & all that shizzle.

EDIT: Found one!
