1. The grey telecom pillar in front of my house, does this contain a circuit with a wire for each house theoretically?  Main street cable carrying all pairs pass through here. Your line (and others) will jumper off from here.

2. I get the best connection upstairs in my bedroom, on a grey wire. From my investigation, the first wire splitting off the black wire is a grey wire. Probably the upstairs one right?  You need to put a tone on an unused pair in the grey cable to find out where it goes.

3. How can I make sure the cables I clipped doesn't pick up noise, can I put a bit of silicone on the ends? Seal with a gel crimp

KiwiNZ:

The attenuation results in the range  30db to 40db is very good.
The signal to noise ratio would be useful to see, it would seem that the Orcon service is not causing the issue to the extent your D/L rate would suggest. I would concur with Orcon that the issue would lay
with your Network and or Modem. As a matter of interest the Wan line to your modem is it long or short? does it have a lot of kinks in it ?

Hi KiwiNZ,

I'm not sure I agree an attnuation of late 30's is good, if you want more than 7 mbs down on adsl2 It should be mid 20's on a line length of 1.7 km.
Signal to noise I'll get tonight. I'm also thinking it is the line, and not orcon.

The wan line to my modem? The black telecom cable? ( I would estimate from the black cable connecting to the grey cable, maybe 20 meters to my jack where modem is connected. Not sure how long the black cable would be, but from the road, probably 30-40 meters) or are you meaning the LAN line from my modem to my phone jack (10 meters)?

10 meter line form Modem to wall out let? way too long.

The Attenuation rate you have given your distance from the DSLAM is very good

Hi KiwiNZ, the difference in sync on 10 meter line, vs 1 meter line is about 100kbps. I have a 10 meter line because the telephone jack is on the other side of the room. I need it across the room. I did test 10 meter vs 1 meter and the reduction in speed was minimal.

And on noise margin, check this http://www.speedguide.net/dsl_speed_calc.php. I don't agree that it is very good.

Thanks Coffebaron, I know about the gel crimps, just wondered whether a bit of silicon might do the same as I have silicon handy

You should:
Just cut that alien cable.
Take off.
Nuke the site from orbit.

It's the only way to be sure.

My choice would be to move the modem close to the outlet and considerably reduce the Wan line length to minimum then connect to your PC using a longer ethernet cable. Cat 5 etc is for better for distance than the other cable. Then get a tech in to fix your cabling with in the house.

Would do, but it sounds like this way would cost me way more than paying coffeebarron $150!

Yup, that was my first choice. But at that point it was easier to lay one cable rather than 3-4 thick cat5 cables that are difficult to hide. Reason I tested the speeds and it was acceptable to me. I will however do any further testing with the shorter cable to make sure that that is ruled out.

I will do for testing yes, but I need the modem on the other side of the room to be able to use it. Would be useless sitting on the other side with a short cable and no computer, ps3 and more computer connectivity. The whole point was to move it there.

Take into consideration:

1. Speed on short cable before recent drop. 7600kbps --------------Speed on 10 meter cable before recent drop 7300kbps
2. Speed on long cable since Sunday night. 5100 kbps. Haven't checked short cable yet.

Hi all the numbers you mention are pretty irrelivent if you have several 10's of meters of line stubs in place. Sort that and then you can talk about meaningful improvements.

Yup, think I'll take a chance and cut the wires after the grey one going upstairs, and then connecting gel-caps to those. Two things can happen. I may be right and the probable wire upstairs is the grey one I am thinking at the line-in connection, or my adsl can be down. At this point, a call might go out to coffeebarron.

EDIT:

So in other words as below:

1. Black wire coming in, that should be in demarcation point, stops short of demarcation point.
2. Grey wire connected to black wire that seems to be going upstairs to my upstairs jack I am using
3. White wire connected to black wire, that seems to go to my daughters room downstairs. (CLIP THIS)
4. Grey wire connected to grey wire in point 2 above, that seems to be going to my kitchen, where a further two wires split that seems to be going upstairs to my bedroom, and somewhere I dunno.(CLIP THIS)

yeh I was wondering about the line stubs too.
To the OP, just because you dont have anything plugged into the other jacks they still create a bit of a stub network. But I see you might have already 'clipped' the wires to all the other jacks at the demarc where you found the black lead in from the street.

Bu stubs, you are referring to the ends that I clipped off hanging around in mid air right? If so, yes, I should have 4 stubs hanging in mid-air now. If I do the further cuts, there should only be 2 wires that I will put gel caps on as coffee baron stated.

I did clip two connections yes. One to a bedroom, another to another bedroom. I think the one in the kitchen was branching of one of the clipped ones as well, and in the kitchen, a further 2 branching from there, one I think to downstairs lounge, the other to upstairs bedroom.
