canoe: try calling ryan at stratanet and see if they can deliver wimax to you. we use them to get high speed internet to places like dairy flat, miranda where no land lines at all. they can deliver up to 400mb up/down if you really want.

Won't be using WiMAX at that sort of speed - it'll be a PtP DMR link.

remember if you change provider check the SLA, the level and speed of support will depend on what you pay them.

andynz: so that justifies the red note book, no records kept and me having to tell the tech how to reconnect our DSL?

Nope, but as previously stated you do not know those are the only records and you do not have a contract with Chorus.

andynz: Chorus have not set date for fibre and long term fibre seems increasingly unlikely. so no fibre and no copper. Just dandy. Great Barrier Island has people moving it to it because of the ability to do business now yet 20min from cbd?

So because you think there is uncertainty you immediately decide it will never happen? Great logic. I would be more likely to think if any upgrade were to be done in the area it would be fibre. There is no economic sense in demanding they upgrade the copper network. And because Chorus are a profit driven company they will (normally) do what is economically sensible and rightly so.

I wonder if you ran a business whether you would expend a great deal of money and time to keep 0.01% of your customer base happy.

Once again, you know you live in an area with dodgy wires and apparently have done so for more than two decades. If it bothers you too much then the option of shifting is always available to you. If that is impossible then wait for the fibre.

Actually I do run a business and sometimes your smaller customs take up a bigger percentage of your time. that's just the nature of the beast. I take up 0% percent of Chorus's time when the DSL is present. I don't think it unreasonable to be anoid when a perfectly good working service gets disconnected and they guys don't even know it exists or how to reconnect. is that really acceptable?

Are you saying that Chorus don't know their network?

But It's your ISP that deals with Chorus not you, so you are correct you take up zero of their time.

It would seem in this particular case that Chorus does not know its network, yes.

andynz: You only have to read my many posts here about Whenuapai and Chorus to know this single post is not only about a specific fault but a much bigger issue of the way the copper infrastructure is run.

Ah yes, I remember you now, LOL!

Those red notebooks are awesome.
I keep one at all my high sites and log everything in it - every visit, i log what I do so that if i get hit by a bus tomorrow, my replacement will know whats happening at the site and not waste time trying to figure it out.

There should be a log/notebook in every cabinet around the country - its standard practice worldwide.

Of course there will be a master map back at the dispatch office so that if the thing gets hit by a car, they can put another one in its place and rebuild everything.

But seriously, no tech wants to get out his laptop, hook up a 3g connection and do a database lookup if he just wants to find out which pair of wires go somewhere or are marked as bad.

Its just faster to open a red book and look at the last tech's notes.

Hi Ray

Yes note books are great but sadly had no entry for our connection.  After the roadside conversation I'm not convinced it has been added.  Apologies for the delayed reply, I had a week away hence part of my frustration at the cut connection the night before departing.  It made the decision for me to move all email and no secure storage off site.  Less stress and more reading for the NSA :)
