Alright, gotta buy a modem right now. At Pricespy I only see 4 VDSL modems, cheapest 175 NZD. Not available on Trademe...
So, perhaps ADSL2+ is the first best option, right? Netgear seems pretty popular on Pricespy, is that brand the way to go? Or should I get other brand?

I presume that the $175 modem referred to is the DrayTek DV130 ADSL/VDSL modem/router.
This is a nice little unit if you prefer "no frills" - you could use it for ADSL2 initially, and then optionally upgrade to VDSL2 later using the same modem.
You will need a separate router if you want wireless or multiple wired connections (I prefer to have a separate router anyway)

You can buy a basic vdsl modem/router with wifi from telecom for $150

Unless you are a super-geek, it will work fine for virtually anything you want to do with it.

(You don't have to be a telecom customer to buy one)

No you won't need an extra router. The draytek is also a router and has wifi.

It is on pricespy for around $150

You will need to upgrade to the latest firmware to do full brdige from their site. Only bad thing is that their full bridge instruction is not seem right on some isp. Found resolution on one of the thread here.

Btw PBtech only sellingthem for 155

It should be fine. The order type is different which means (in theory) Chorus won't process the order until the other ISP has disconnected anyway.

It should be fine. The order type is different which means (in theory) Chorus won't process the order until the other ISP has disconnected anyway.

Whoehoe, just got email, will get connected February 5th. Means 2 days without internet, but that's no problem. Modem is on its way.
I'll give a review here after connecting! First impression is good, response to question via email within one hour.

Alright, we have internet from Bigpipe! Everything went really smooth. Today we should get connected. Suddenly a guy from Chorus was at our door. The website states everything can be done remotely, but in rare cases they have to do something on-site was the response from Bigpipe. No problem at all, he was gone in half an hour.

Only thing is the speed, Speedtest.net says 18mbit down, 8 mbit up. VDSL should be quicker. However, the DSL line is split into 7 lines, each with a RJ45 connector. One of them is connected to a RJ45 socket near the DSL point, which is going to a RJ45 socket in the living room. There I connected the modem.
So, the DSL line being split and the pretty long line (from the DSL point to the lounge) could be the problem. So, I'm thinking about installing a master splitter if that could solve the problem. I've asked Bigpipe about that.

sorry about the tech turning up. We're looking into how we manage it better. the connection only order we use shouldn't require a tech visit, but from running the trial it seems sometimes they turn up anyway as they like to thoroughly test the connection works before they leave the job. We'll have a chat to Chorus and look to change our messaging to be clearer. Thanks for the feedback, very valuable.

As far as the splitter goes, with that setup, it sounds like it is 100% worth doing.

In wellington, I believe Cyril7 does installs down there so you could drop him a PM.
