I'm in Three Kings, Auckland. They can build one outside my house, on the drive way or in the middle of my lounge right this minute if they want.

I'll also put up a cellsite for the street if that would help - we have poor coverage in general.

Note to network builders: don't bother arguing with people like that, just build the network where the people do want it.

+1, in terms of things visable to the road, the unpainted downpipe is what stands out like dogs bollox,
once the grass grows back over the soil infront of the Chorus "box" and the flax grows and droops it will be less lisable than the WE transformer,

I also live in Tawa, here is my "horrible green thing" I had to put in to get to a UFB connection, some people dont know how lucky they are :)

If there is going to be proliferation of these, they should all be painted like Minions......
At least that would give the aggrieved a valid reason for complaining

I've had fibre past my gate and a pit not 30 metres from the house for over 18 months. I'd pay ...anything up to $10K... to have a "horrible green thing" and fibre to my door!

Unfortunately Chorus don't seem interested. It is apparently "distribution fibre" and not for user access.

So appears I'm stuck with...

Who have you approached? Because if it is suitable you should be able to get a HSNS connection - the install costs of which could easily be $5k + for a custom job, but you will be paying HSNS/P2P costs which will start at around $600 per month minimum for the circuit costs for 100Mbps (excluding any data).

It's on the side of a garage wall, they should just be happy they can get fibre! I'd happily have 3 of them in front of the house if it meant I could get fibre. It's similar with cellphone towers, no-one wants them, but then they complain they can't get phone service. They're just nitpicking.

It would kill the value of your house though, as a percentage of buyers, especially those with kids, will not buy houses close to cellphone towers or under power lines. You can get some good deals if you are prepared to buy houses under powerlines.

I can understand homeowners who get these things installed outside their house to a point, because their house is their major asset and buyers would use any negatives to beat down the price. But in this case it looks minor as it is on a road reserve, and it is the same sort of size as a normal box, plus a neutral colour. So I doubt it will make any difference to the value. I think any installation like that should always be notified to the homeowner though, so they are aware of it, as it is just common courtesy.

I have a neighbour who has one of those big transformer buildings on their land, and they have to get the lines company to reimburse them every year for with their share of the rates. Now that would put me off buying, as it is poorly maintained by the lines company and shabby looking and is the street front for their property.

I just think that it is a really poor story, especially the photo on that angle makes it look bigg than it is.

I thought Chorus have done a pretty good job around here. There's a property with a white wall and they put a cream coloured cabinet in front of it instead of the standard green one. I'm not sure if that was a request of the home owner. I'm sure they could get permission to paint the FAT if they asked nicely.

I contacted Chorus via an email link that was on their RBI site and got a "we will look into it" reply but that was a year ago and no reply to a followup enquiry sent a few months later. No sign of any cabinets appearing either. Fibre would be ideal but I'd take VDSL or even ADSL in a heartbeat if I could get it.

eXDee: Just showed the three photos taken to someone asking them if they found the green pole intrusive. They actually wasn't sure what i meant by pole, and barely noticed it until i pointed it out.

I wouldn't be surprised if most people, including those who might be looking at buying a home wouldn't notice it either.

I had to look twice at the photos, and thanks for those because Stuff's were terrible. It doesn't look that bad at all. A few flowers around the base would be neat.

You will get the same pricing as a UFB urban customer, but you need to understand the differences between P2P (point-to-point) and GPON fibre which I'm guessing you don't understand.

The UFB pricelist offers both P2P and GPON pricing. The headline pricing is all based on GPON which means your connection is shared with 24 other customers delivering 2.4Gbps between those 24 customers. You're all connected back to an optical splitter and share a single fibre port. The only dedicated bandwidth on your plan is the CIR speed - if you get a 100Mbps GPON plan your guaranted bandwidth is the 2.5Mbps high priority CIR only accessible with the correct 802.1p tag. Your 100Mbps headline speed is an EIR (best effort traffic)

P2P is dedicated fibre connection back to a single fibre port. It's dedicated bandwidth with a CIR equal to the speed you buy, If you buy a 100Mbps connection you're guaranteed 100Mbps.

In your situation you may be able to access the P2P pricing which will be the same (or similar) to what somebody in a metropolitan area pays for a P2P connection. You can't access GPON pricing because your fibre isn't connected to any GPON kit - the cost of the fibre port isn't shared with 23 other users so you will have to pay the full cost of that port which costs $$$$. You will however pay CIR costs to backhaul your traffic around the country to the nearest ISP POP, which will also cost a significant amount of money.

This is a big maybe though - distribution fibre isn't normally used to connect customers because it's what it's name implies - distribution fibre. There are however options for rural customers to connect into this fibre, the details of which are on the Chorus site.

The best option for many smaller rural areas is going to be partnering with the local school and sharing their connection, with 5Ghz wireless being the best option.
