Well that's a pity that it's damaged. Did they know how long ago it had been removed?

If we are talking an insurance demolition then yes the insurance company generally owns the salvage, ie any property that they insured and which is part of the demolition. This is called subrogation - the insurance company takes over the insured's rights in relation to the insured property. However the insurance company weren't insuring the ONT, nor was it the insured's property so they can't insure it anyway. (Although his contents policy might include accidental damage to it, contents policies usually cover accidental damage to third party property - which is why tenants should have insurance - just in case they leave the heater on and burn the house down).

However a lot of the niceties go out the window during urgent demolitions especially where your CBD is locked down and you are prevented from getting your gear out. I have heard some pretty hairy cowboy stories from after the chch eqs.

I still have the cable modem from the house I haven't been able to live in for 3 1/2 years and they use a new model now anyway. When we moved to this rental, they were still using the old ones but weren't interested in reusing the old one, or in taking it back.

How much do they charge?
They charge for a complete ont ~$249 if a PSU goes missing

but if the PSU fails do they replace it free as it's 'their' property anyway?

if their equipment failed in the cabinet... no question of them replacing, but since it's their equipment, even if it's in my house... it's their responsibility to maintain it, right?

and [just a thought] if it's theirs... do i get to charge them for the electricity it consumes on my bill to run "their" equipment, and deduct this from my ISP bill and ask them to reclaim it from their supplier? (wouldn't THAT be a laugh to try explain to the T1 phone response :D )

I guess that if a demolition company is contracted to knock down a building, they either remove the contents (as in this case) or it gets bulldozed.

It gets murky when you have property like this ONT that never belonged to the building owner or occupier.

If the ONT or the ONT's PSU fails, due to a hardware failure (and not some other homeowner cause, i.e tipping water all over it, or dog eating it) then yes, we replace it :)
