Reposting my initial wall of text with correct formatting as can't edit original.

I'd like to know more about the platform that Pure Hosting intend on using (I can't access the website from work).

  • Where are the servers based?
  • What operating system do they use?
  • What control panel do they use?
  • What the are specs on the server(s)?
  • What is the connection speed?
  • What credentials does the datacentre have?
  • What experience does the owner have with hosting? (specifics not just the blurb in the email)

I'm all for new companies joining the market, it leads to compeition and innovation. What scares me is people who are ill prepared, who disappear after a short time and give the market a bad name. Not by intention but by action. I've run my own hosting enterprise and been managing servers for many years and I wouldn't dream of launching a venture targetting 7000 customers of another service without having the infrastructure and services in place to support it.

I hope, hope, hope, that this is not being hosted in someones spare room on a residental connection. If it is, there is no shame in renting a VPS or Dedicated server with a known provider and expanding as custom grows. Simple things like clustered DNS and MX should be a minimum, along with server backups.

The web is littered with fly-by-night hosts, most of whom entered the market with high hopes and best intentions. There are plenty of resources out their to guide the construction of a great hosting provider (WebHostingTalk.com is one of them).

Spamming 7000 people who have not authorised contact is a great way to gain a bad name before things even start. Best of luck.

AndiB got an email too. I have not got one yet and at one point had an account with 24/7.

What experience do you have with operating an ISP?

OK OK, we get it, you don't think much of it. But really does it need to continue like this much longer? Lots of people learn from making mistakes, at least give him a chance to rectify it (and enough time), before sticking the boot in again, surely.

This is not one mistake.

This is a series of sufficiently serious matters which bring core competencies in disrepute. These are not the sort of 'mistakes' someone who is seeking to be involved in the internet industry can afford to make.

They seemingly have no clue what they are doing.

Their manner is very unbusinesslike and they refer to setting up servers as:

ZaneThoms:

as for the website i have just been putting my time into geting the servers running strong and kill all them bugs.

shows they do not even begin to understand the ways things can go wrong and the customer loses out.

If they are still around, I strongly suggest they get a job working for an existing ISP and learn how things are done properly. In many other industries people have to get qualifications and even serve apprenticeships to get in. The Internet industry is exceptionally liberal in that way, but the skill level needed is still right up there.

Normally I would agree with you and I try and support local startups, but if one is going to start a business, take other folks money do your homework first then start  up making sure you have the budget, the knowledge, the product and above all a business plan. If you are going to learn whilst running make sure customers know it's a "Beta" service before they sign up and before they part with cash.

I didn't say he made one mistake, I said people learn by making mistakes, and whilst this is hardly ideal, and I wouldn't personally host with them, continuing to flagigate the guy with such negative tone doesn't really feel like the community thing to do. Everyone has had a say about it, how about we let him go and learn from that and see what happens.

Yah look I do get that, and I do actually agree, but it's more the continued ongoing overly negative tone which isn't really helping anyway which seems over the top.

Agreed, I hope they can see it through, learn from it and succeed.

The sad truth is that you can perfectly well sell a poor service, because people don't know how to tell a good one from a bad one.

I doubt you would feel so charitable if you were a client paying to do a potentially dangerous activity (Caving, Jet boating?) and found out the person running the show was working it out as they went along. Industries all over the place have, or are, implementing quality standards for the same reason as being discussed here. Set the bar too low and we get jackasses in the industry causing unnecessary issues.

There is a difference though with something that involves human life, vs something that just involves a website and email. As with any service, people need to do their research when looking for a host. Many just look at price alone and think hosting is a commodity, which it isn't, and it is often the cheap ones that have problems. But there is so much more to it, and reliability and service between providers can vary a huge amount. Seeing how long a provider has been around for and emailing them to find out how good their support is, is something people should do before signing up to one.

I agree with you that people learn by making mistakes. My feeling is that in order to learn from the mistake one has to accept that they made a mistake. My feeling is that at least in public he has only taken responsibly for part of the issue, and that is the cc rather than bcc issue. He has yet to admit that the email was a bad idea from the start.

If he has admitted to himself that spamming people was a bad thing to do and he won't be doing it again good for him.
