Well my Orcon is connected. My internet is operational, the national speed is not on par with Telstraclear but the international throughput is much better which is rather surprising.

Telstra Nat 7000Kbps
Orcon Nat 3500Kbps

Telstra Int 600Kbps (AUS)
Orcon Int 3000KBps (AUS)

The rates fare much better on the New York Server. Orcon gets 1300 Kbps when Telstra maxed at 300Kbps odd.
and this is running at peak time, Youtube works too which is more than I can say for many ISPs

And hey, it's super-cheap. I'm not bothering with VoIP any longer so the lower speeds do not bother me..

Maybe Vodafone gets more media coverage because it has the money to do things quicker than Orcon (ihug got some actual equipment in the exchange while orcon had only a painted metal face plate)
I'm sure everyone would be happy to join orcon for a 24Mbps connection with 10gb of international and free national traffic for less than $42.95 but I wouldn't hold my breath

Actually, we both had equipment in there.

Lol, that might be a bit of an expensive exercise if they did that jumbo :) Nice to see there are some other options coming, but it's still kind of disappointing about the lack of flexibility. But I'll wait and see what happens - I want to keep my 40GB friends and family plan though :(

I think it'd be best for everyone if Duncan just gave me a bunch of free money.

Switched from my Orcon Max/Max 5GB plan + Telecom Homeline economy !
For the same money, we get 15 gigs more (and did I mention free NZ calls?)
Hope my static IP address stays the same, as well as the line performance (it has been exceptional so far).

The only thing: I now will have to call Orcon when my phone line breaks, it has happened 3 or 4 times in 3 years, always due to external faults.

How did the changeover from Telecom landline to Orcon landline go? Did you need to advise Telecom or was it all handled by Orcon?

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

I think you will find that Orcon will do all that for you. My son had the phone put on at his place on Sunday took Telecom 20 minutes to connect and as soon as he got his phone number and account number from Telecom he was straight onto signing up with this offer from Orcon. As far as I know he has not had contact with Telecom since.

This is correct. You shouldn't have to tell your losing provider at all that you are moving off them for phone or DSL services. The loosing provider will get notified automatically via Telecom you have moved off the old provider (should normally) stop billing you.

But be aware if you are on a term contract at all on your old provider as you might be stung if you move off before the term contract finishes.

Glad to see you added "should normally" there! When I moved from Telecom to Telstra it took me 4 months to get them to stop billing me despite the fact the physical line wasn't even connected

Not sure I'm brave enough to try another switch just yet.
