Wondered why my broadband connection all of a sudden stopped. It was just maverick using up all of WxC bandwidth to do his speedtest :) lol

I get better speed test results to the Xnet site at ~80mbps (my desktop is only on a 100mbps switch port :( ). Ihug is still ~40mbps.

Ideally there would be neutral boxes hosted at APE and WIX for consumers to test against

Mine is fixed as well. Now getting ~2MBits instead of 200kpbs.

I suspect your PC is buffering the file they download to perform the speed test.

During the auckland/ihug speed test it starts at 13mb for about half a second, drops right down to 1-2mb, stays there for a while and right near the end of the test shoots up to around 10mb (what i should be getting) this seems strange to me, like they're trying to make it look good for them while not giving up much bandwidth for the test?

ive done this about 5-6 times all with the same result, doesnt happen on any of the other servers...

Interesting enough, I did a speed test today on the Auckland server and it was sponsored by WorldXchange, my favourite ISP. :)

About 3 hours later I did another speedtest and it was still sponsored by ihug.

Looks like WorldXchange may be co-sharing or even taking over the Auckland node. :)

I wrote to www.speedtest.net when I first discovered problems with the ihug node... Perhaps they actually read their e-mail and decided another node in Auckland world be good :)

Go maverick.

Really, I don't see the point - all these tests appear to indicate is that if your ISP is providing the test, you're going to get better results whether its nzdsl (running through Orcon) (lower than 'real tests'), WXC (slightly lower than NZDSL), or Ihug (100kbps wtf?, now fixed).

Of course, I understand the motivation from the ISP point of view - get your providers stats up.

But for me - real downloads certainly show me that my connection appears to be faster than what some of these 'speedtests' show.

I agree that a ISP's speed test will always be faster than to some other point further out in the network, but the ihug results were just taking the mickey.

I believe that CityLink in Wellington, and WorldXchange in Auckland will behave in a more mature and technically literate manor.

when I use speedtest to test to USA/Australia or around NZ, I expect it not to equal my connect speed, but I expect a reasonable, reliable reading.

The fact that Citylnk are not peering with xtra and TCL means all results to their wellington server are flawed.

I find the best way to do a speed test is to download a file from MS's servers, or Apples.

The problem is that regardless of speedtest server, whether it be NZDSL, WorldExchange, or Ihug - the speedtest website does not make this clear whether these are ISP run speed tests, instead, using the 'sponsored by' wording which doesn't come outright and say 'This ISP is running this test'.

Furthermore its [speedtests] inability to ensure that there are not ISP specific issues, like for instance - Ihugs apparent 'throttling' (whether accidental or deliberate) of off net connectivity adds further weight. I have noticed differences when the Worldexchange test went live a while ago and then disappeared when compared to the classic NZdsl site.

Instead, I prefer to lump speedtest.net and other speedtest sites into the pseudoscience basket. Because they try to take these 'best effect' tests which at best, indicates that you can transfer xxx kbps from this server, and then present them as 'connection speeds'. Of course, trying to provoke me in private messages exportgoldman is rather quite amusing - however - it only confirms a few things.

Actually, don't you mean Telecom and TCL unpeered with everyone in NZ bar themselves, then started demanding money for the privilage. Isn't that flawed, that your ISP of choices link to that communities central peering point is slow and follows a trumbone route?

So, yes, getting from Telecom to the WIX (Wellington Internet Exchange) may be slower... But others were making the point of some neutral point to do testing from, where better than a city peering point? Need I remind you that CityLink is actually the WIX?

I agree, real world downloads are the ultimate test, but if you want to test speed to a city or country, I also use speedtest, as I don't know what sites are actually HOSTED in what cities/countries. (well without a lot of work.)

Anyways, for risk of being spanked again for getting offtopic I signoff. :)

Due to some certain posts made on this thread. this thread has had to be locked and the offending posts removed. Not something that was desired, however things really got out of hand, particularly with some of the remarks made.

This decision was not exactly taken lightly and was performed by multiple moderators.
