Hello Everyone,

I'm getting some weird speed issues to the Auckland node of www.speedtest.net, I can only get 400kbps, but if I do Sydney I get 1400kbps. I've tried it from two (XNET) connections, one of which is on the unbundled Ponsonby Exchange.

Is anyone else getting weird results from the Auckland node of www.speedtest.net?

The Auckland speedtest is now 'sponsored' by Ihug. My speeds have dropped from 6.5-7mbit to 120kbps on that test.

I'm also using Xnet, and this is the first time ever I got higher upload than download speeds:

To Auckland: 245 down, 637 up.
To Wellington: 589 down, 639 up.
To Napier: 275 down, 631 up.
To Sydney: 3005 down, 624 up.

The three servers in NZ are all 'sponsored' by different companies, and today the speeds from all of them suck. The overseas servers are still doing fine...?

What is going on?

I think you will find that Ihug customers will post good speeds , other users on different ISP's will show much lower speeds to the same Test site, i.e ourseleves and Brads ISP for example  .... If IHUG's customers post good results and other show poor results one would think that perhaps some throttling would be going on, that may help their own ISP stats to improve on the site since it is a popular test tool and I don't think IHug even rank on the site right now makes them look good everybody else look bad.....nope they don't rankLaughing however if this is the kind of results being seen then perhaps it will undermine this product as a test tool when it's being hosted like this...just a unsupported  theory Wink   but since I think I have a rather large amount of bandwidth at my fingertips you would think I may have some good results.....I think not

Speed Test

I say all this with tounge in cheek but all joking aside the bottom line is that speedtests utils being hosted on other ISP networks should not be fully believed if you can use your local ISP's tools for DSL checking then you will be better informed as it will tell whats happening on their own network with your own connection directly to the ISP that you are with not transitting to another ISP's network.

I agree with you maverick, but the other sites in NZ are sponsored by other companies, and are all having issues... Do you not think there perhaps is something else going on as well.

I *DO* believe the Auckland ihug hosted site would be slow as a dog now as their bandwidth problems are well known.

Exactly.
I'm getting mixed results, ranging from 300kbps to 19392kbps - however speeds are much, much better on other on net  speedtests.

Phil, just yesterday (and every other previus day), I was getting results similar to the Xnet ones.
And it's not just the Auckland server...

I think you can see that SOMETHING is going on.

(PS: When I did the Napier test earlier, it wasn't any better than the Auckland or Wellington tests)

And just for a little variety from www.nzdsl.co.nz:

Download Speed: 350Kbit/s
Upload Speed: 125Kbit/s

And just for you Phil, From speedtest.xport.co.nz:

Download Speed: 4.04Mbps
Upload Speed: 92.4Kbps

Which looks about right.

However, WHY is there suddenly a massive difference between the Xnet test and most other NZ speedtests? Especially since before today, there was NO such difference.

No idea at this stage, Speedtest.net is hosted by different companies on different networks why thay are all going slow at present we have no idea, Brad and Cokemaster are not on Xnet and have the same issue......

Put your tinfoil hats away.  I'm on TCL cable in Wellington and my Auckland results are same as usual:

I would imagine it's an issue of how the connection is being routed.  The Wellington speedtest server is really slow for me because for some reason my connection to it is routed via LA.

Try doing a tracert to the server (speedtest.ihug.co.nz)

Anyway, these speedtests are really only indicative and shouldn't be relied on.

I am on Orcon and get a steady 750Kb/sec and above on my downloads, not uncommon to hit 920KB.

I always got good speed test results but since iSlug took over the Auckland results now show me with a much higher upload speed than download. But my actaul speeds have not decreased. I blame Vodafone.
