jonb: You will be having a similar install to me. Fibre cable to ONT in the garage. Then Cat 6 cable under house to Router in lounge. The phone port in the ONT is connected to where the old phone cable entered the property (where your current master filter is located) to switch house phone wiring from copper to fibre.

Cat6 part from Router to ONT may be at your own cost. You could always just temporarily have the HG858 next to ONT to allow a successful install to be ticked off, and then sort the eventual location of the router yourself afterwards.

1. Where is your FTB?
2. Did the installer route Cat6 to your router?

The FTB is just for your connection only and goes on the outside of your House. It is the point where the fibre 'cabling' from the roadside connects to the fibre cabling run to the ONT.

Hmm ... He didn't say moving the copper costs me money.

He wouldnt have as you dont need to give you a standard install - but if you want to get any additional work on your existing copper (repurpose a Cat6 etc), move jkpts or add additional network cableing then that costs.

My isp is spark and yes I've asked for a phone line

Spark dont allow WYAH so they couldnt do the repurposeing anyway.
Your Voice will then be delivered off the ONT and back feed to the ETP and connected to the existing 'Legacy' House wireing all as part of the standard install

OK so let me get this right.

1. All the while when he mentioned "short" and "special fibre cable" he was meaning the connection between FTB - ONT??? So the FTB must sit just outside where he wants to put the ONT?

2. So you are saying a "standard" UFB install puts the router at the ONT in no man's land, and then up to the smart home owner to then rewire the house if he wants to put the router where his old Copper Broadband Modem used to be?

Serious questions, thanks for any enlightenment.

The 'standard' install sticks the ONT next to your existing router location, behind your TV or something. Non-standard is to have a length of Cat6 between the two.

My FTP is on the side of the garage exterior wall, whilst the ETP for old copper is under the middle of the house. The special fibre cable runs around the garage to ONT on opposite wall, which then has Cat6 to an internal wall outlet next to router. The voice cable goes from ONT to the ETP under the house and joined to phone wiring.

In my install the tech did the Cat6 part for free, as he would have otherwise continued the fibre cable to same place as router. But that was probably because he was feeling generous and I was interested, officially the free install is only upto the ONT.

1. doesnt have to be just outside, ie back to back, could be a few m from where the FTB is

2. generally yes, its generally put as close to the street as they can, and if they can re-use the copper lead in in the case of underground cabling they will, this generally means that where the ETP is for copper will be were the FTB will be for fibre. and yes its up to the house owner to place the router where they want it but then you are responsible for the cabling. can you imagine the cost if they had to run Ethernet cable to the other end of peoples houses?

Yes he refused to stick the ONT near my existing router. Says the special fibre cable will be too long. But he was happy to stick it on the opposite side of the lounge. (He plans to enter the house on the opposite end. Didn't ask where the FTB was to be in that case.)

Question: What is the recommended distance between FTB - ONT?

jonb: ONT's are commonly installed in small metal cabinets recessed in the wall in new builds. If your cupboard is any bigger than this, with some vents for circulation it should not be an issue:

I don't think he plans to install the ONT in a cupboard. He was going to put in the lounge for all to see.

I think it all comes down the guy on the day. My Chorus installer was great. He fed the fibre through existing non standard underground ducting from the street, managed to clear a blockage and some concrete capping that was out of site. The FTB is actually under my house as the ducting terminated there.

I did some work before hand removing about a meter of loose fill that had covered the duct exit under the house but it was still a mission to find the end of the duct.

After installing the ONT he just grabbed a patch cable I had near my router to test the connection between the ONT and router so no reason to see why you cannot move the routher afterwards.

I think the paper work said 16 hours labour over three visits to install - an he said my install was straight forward!
I'd hate to see a complex install.

they would install it in a cupboard/cabinet if you had one there to put it in, if not on the wall it goes

Another question.

The fibre is going to be attached to the fence.
Between the fence and the house there is a circumferential path of about 1m wide worth of tarseal.

The guy said he was going to hack off the tarseal to create a gap big enough to jam the fibre in to bring it from the fence to the house.

Is that normal?

I would push to have a longer fibre cable installed to place ONT where you want it. It lights up like a Christmas Tree at night, with it's LEDs if its on a wall in the Lounge.

No I insisted it not be seen. Ideally it's in the garage but he can't get the fibre there.

I'm more worried about how he's going to run it from the fence to the house.
