I've found using livestreamer with a few (e.g. 5) threads gets rid of my buffering problems which mostly happen at night. Even with a Sydney server, performance seems to be limited by one thread sometimes.
I help manage the CDN at Twitch, and we think we might have been able to partially mitigate one of the issues that has been causing some degradation in performance in NZ out of SYD. Has your experience on the site improved? If so (or not), which ISP are you on? I would expect VLC threads (which add a lot of latency) to help, but we're pretty dedicated to making sure the website itself is in working order. Any fresh reports would be most useful.

Just given a few streams I watch a try in source (60fps) and for the first time in a while it played without buffering. Good to see some progress 😀
It's a lot more consistent for me on the web player via 2degrees. Not 100%buffer free, but a massive improvement over what it was! :) I still get a few issues on my Android phone, but for now I'll put that down to my phone misbehaving.

it seems to be better for me now, when the node first sprung up i proxied to california and hitting the US server worked a lot better.
there's been a few congestion issues with different ISP's in NZ to Australia over time. (as well as to any2ix, which is where it was going previously), it'd be kind of nifty if there was an option to choose which server to use, and at least it means in the future when more issues happen again it'd be easier for users to work around. it'd be even cooler if there was local peering in New Zealand :)

I'm using Vodafone's "Ultra Fast Broadband (cable)" in Christchurch. Video stream throughput has greatly improved since yesterday. I tried searching for the highest quality twitch stream I could find and found one with a bit rate between 4-5Mbps. No video pauses at all. Good job. So... whatever net device you fixed, if you ever see someone fiddling with it then tear off his face and pee in his eye sockets.

Seems better on a lot of the bigger streams, but I still get buffering on High quality on some streams (with around 4-5k viewers). Traceroute shows it is the Sydney server. ISP is TrustPower, high quality uses about 1/3rd of my line speed (the line is very consistent too).
After the initial load my current stream has not buffered once after about 20mins. Buffer size is between 3 sec and 7 sec constant. Voda Fibre 100/20. Loving it.
tstone: Do these changes only affect PC users? I use the Xbox App and it's performance is really bad lately.
The changes that were made were fundamental to the CDN, and would affect all platforms. Not sure why the app would be behaving poorly, but I also don't work on it I'm afraid.
The changes should be helping all streams - we do not do any sort of QoS shaping in-POP by stream size.
