Yeah must have been more viable to go that way, I didn't trust that map till you confirmed.
Maybe a petition will show up and they will become 10gigtown, thoughts @Hio77?

I have a strong suspicion that at least one of the microwave sites on that west coast chain is solar powered so this limits the size of the installation (and hence the capacity of the whole link)

Haast is a bit out of the ordinary. Link below suggests that the town's best service is Team Talk DSL over UCLL copper, with TeamTalk microwave backhaul. So the microwave backhaul won't show on Chorus's systems.

6 sites south of Fox are getting mobile black spot coverage (including Haast), So I expect there will be a significant upgrade of backhaul capacity to service these,

Now the question will be whether it will be an upgraded microwave backhaul, or will they trench a fibre down the side of SH6

But either way I would expect Haast's BB to improve markedly

The only problem is that the Haast exchange doesnt have fibre with in 150KM of the thing! No ones spending millions upon millions to connect Haast.
Do note GPON is an entire network solution, end to end, You would be talking a P2P fibre link. $1000's per month, Bugger all bandwidth and data compared to the subsidized UFB plans.

Looking at the publicly available maps, I would hazard a guess that its only going to be upgraded microwave from Fox Glacier south. Fox (and Franz) are getting UFB2 so logically they would have fibre as backhaul but no further for the fibre. I'm sure someone from the Rural Connectivity Group or CFH would be able to give a more concrete answer however.

It is likely to be more than 6 sites. The map shows blue dots which are sites, state highway they want covered in red and doesn't even show the target rural user coverage.

Oh so Haast is finally getting mobile coverage? That's good! Better than nothing (which they have currently). Yes, I realise it's in the middle of nowhere - but it's a through town, whereas Karamea (with less people) is an actually destination you go to - and they're getting fibre. But mobile coverage is a good start.

There are a lot of rural properties (like mine) that are on the outskirts of a town or city. The connection density is actually quite high close to populated areas.

Often the wealthiest people live in this situation so the pressure will be quite high to get fibre out to these areas too.

Karamea was about 20km of new fibre and was strung below power lines.

Hasst is about 100km (either from Lake Hawera or Fox Glacier).

There are also a lot more settlements and more population between Westport and Karamea (with existing fibre) than Fox Glacier and Haast. (The more recent decline in mining won't have helped around Westport).

So when Chorus priced up RBI 1, Karamea likely looked better for both overall costs and costs per person.
