And instead of gradually increasing the prices, maybe its better to get the whole increase from day 1?

Maybe we should expect a price drop of 40%, plus free this and free that. How much was your fibre install? Mine was free, including the guys that scoped, the guys that ran it under my lawn to my house, and the guy that fed it into my living room. Thats $1000 of value, minimum. Maybe I shoulda asked for free Netflix for 10 years as well? At least.....

Roll on user pays if you ask me, too many selfish ones.

When I lived overseas I got free installation of fibre to my apartment in a tiny rural town. Then I got 100Mbps unlimited data for US$35/mo.

Now I'm on VDSL (no fibre until 2022) paying NZ$94.95/mo.

And user pays is generally a dumb idea. Particularly in New Zealand.

Not sure where I implied getting anything for free? Just stating that I expect changes to speed tiers to be ahead coming up to 2020.

What do people think will happen to Gigatown when that ends? If prices go up $20 and everyone switches back to 100/20 that would be a massive failure.

We dont have user pays here as you know, yet we still have whiners. Not you. Given we are a country whose population dwarfs populations of countless international cities, I think its fine here BB wise. If we dod have user pays it will cost "bigly". So we have free fibre upgrades, off set by a gradual increase over time. Seems fair to me

Depends what you mean by failure... If by failure, you mean everyone learns that almost no-one needs gigabit at this point in time, and that 100Mbps fibre is staggeringly good, then yeah, I guess so :-)

I think the original plan was Chorus raised prices by $1 per year. This $2 price increase is higher than they flagged previously

No, it would be $2 plus 15% = $2.30.

But I was replying to the one that said it used to be a $1 increase but now they've raised it to $2, and John said maybe it was + GST but then wouldn't the $1 + GST = $1.15 and not $2.

I'm about to move to Dubai where you get the privilege of paying $148 for 20/6. NZ is at the better end of the spectrum internationally.

And many of the useful things on the Internet in Dubai are blocked too. If you compare what we have here even to Australia we actually look pretty good.

What is interesting is the Commerce Commission has been active in this area with looking at "Unfair Contracts" and where there are unfair terms in the contract that allow changes (even if the contract is entered as a Fixed Charge, Fixed Term contract).

Here is the fact sheet on the Commerce Commission website about what is an unfair term in a contract. Make a complaint to them if you think your ISP has stepped into the area of it being an unfair term.
