I am using ASUS AC87U and just moved it through a 30cm CAT6 and plugged straight into ONT. 

 

Tested with my laptop to the router above, and only manage to get 500/300. Although I think my router is reasonably powerful but I will test with another one will see. It seems to me so far it is either the hardware side of things and/or misconfiguration on the plan.

 

So now you're getting faster than 100/100 - this was most likely a cable limiting to 100Mb, or possibly waiting for provisioning to complete.

Your router is underpowered and will never hit 1 Gb/s. Several other threads on the same router.

Just use the router your ISP supplied as it will be able to cope with 1 Gb/s throughput.
