Chorusnz:

@MichaelNZ It has already been repeated by a great many people here. You are missing the point of where the costs are coming from.

As I said, not only do we have to dig and install our network from the exchange to your property. We also have to install a whole bunch of additional equipment in the exchange to support a residential Fibre connection here.

I never asked for a GPON service.

I never asked you (via an ISP) to quote me for building UFB in this area.

I never said it was a residential service.

Enough said.

Well, if you don't want GPON and it's not Residential then expect the monthly costs to be magnitudes more expensive per month, that would make the 50K they have asked you to contribute to look insignificant over time.

uh....

MichaelNZ:

Just received an "estimate" to bring an NGA fibre from the street corner, past our neighbour and to the boundary of our place. Total run about 20-50 metres depending on which corner of our frontage they bring it in.

$58,500.

And it's only a grass berm.

I am aware of the monthly costs for HSNS and BS4.

I have no idea what an "NGA" fibre is.

If you don't know what you are asking for, and people who do, try and get it for you, then it's not reasonable to rail at those people that the cost is too high.

You have asked, and qualified people have answered. Perhaps it might save you some angst to determine what it is you want, or learn what the terminology is, so you can request the correct thing, but regardless, no matter what you want, based on your location you are looking at big upfront costs with a smaller ongoing cost based on the GPON/NGA network access, or or big up front costs followed by much higher ongoing costs for a dedicated service.

Either way, unfortunately, due to your location, you are up for big money for the reasons outlined before. This is the unfortunate side effect of living rurally, which is offset by the benefits you would likely be getting.

Yup, I'd be looking pretty hard at this as well.

That is a good suggestion and is an option with one of my upline peers.

I have no idea what an "NGA" fibre is.

NGA Fibre = Next Generation Access Fibre = UFB = Fibre service delivered over a GPON connection.

It's not point to point aka HSNS and BS4.

It's GPON via an optical splitter (extra equipment) and a ISAM (also extra equipment) that is installed at the Chorus Exchange (something that doesn't exist today in Norsewood) connected back to the Chorus Core (something that may or may not exist at the Norsewood Exchange) back to a UFB Handover point aka Point of Presence aka POP for the ISPs to deliver service.

It's been said a number of times it's not a trivial activity as a whole lot of EXTRA gear is required JUST FOR YOU as Norsewood isn't in a UFB1 or UFB2 area.

Again I keep on comparing it to a Train line (HSNS, BS4 etc) which are essentially dark fibre point to point services vs driving your car on a road.

Another way to think about it is you are requesting access to the Southern Cross undersea cable for a retail broadband connection when you compare it to "the fibre" that runs along the road, do you think that is something that is simple and straightforward to offer?

Thank you for the explanation. This is not what I wanted. I had in mind a standard active fibre connection like BS4 / HSNS. Just break off one of those 48 strands going along Odin / Ngamoko streets - which is only feeding a street side cabinet. Or shoot another cable through the same conduit. Then dig up the last 20 or so metres to my place.

I wasn't expecting $100 install but their quoted price just blows me away.

Let me turn this around a bit.

What service do you need?

  1. What bandwidth (downstream)?
  2. What bandwidth (upstream)?
  3. What latency?
  4. What availability? ('x' nines, or, maybe more relevant, how long you can afford to be down while they repair stuff)

Do you have cell-phone coverage?

Can you receive Sky satellite TV?

There may be other options to fibre.

Thank you for offering but I already have VDSL which is the best non fibre option.

What makes you so sure that those 48 pairs aren't in use?

Maybe the fibres have been used to connect other entities.
