Always baffles me how there's a few people on here to jump down OP's throat for daring to ask about faster speeds etc. Seems like anyone who has a Gigabit line has to 100% justify it with bandwidth stats and their use case otherwise it's labelled as a waste and unnecessary?

Technically we don't actually NEED more than a Celeron 2GHz CPU, a GTX980 and 4GB of RAM, but having a higher spec'd system is SO much nicer!

Same deal with Interweb connections; We probably only NEED 10MBit, but hell the extra speed is awesome!

Plus, I'm a speed freak; cars, planes, computers, Internet, so it's kinda just how I roll :D

AND seeing 100MB/sec downloading is VERY COOL!!

It's not necessary to upgrade your internal network, as several posts have already pointed out.

The new Hyperfibre ONT has four 'downstream' 1GbE ports as well as a 10GbE port, and of course an 'upstream' 10Gb optical port.
So you could have, say, three individually wired 'need for speed' devices each running an uncontended 1Gb link to the ONT, plus maybe a switch supporting the slower speed devices on a shared 1Gb link. That would only cost a few cable runs.

Oh, and has been pointed out, running an internet-connected server (as the OP said he does) is not at all a typical 'residential user'. Makes you 1% of the 1% maybe? ;-)

Exactly if people dont want to upgrade to it thats fine no ones forcing them to but there's no need to get all defensive when someone asks about wanting to get a faster plan. If they want to pay for a faster plan thats up to them ffs. Sometimes things are just nice/cool to haves for those that can afford it.

When you see a thread that relates to internet speed, its pretty easy to predict how its going to turn out.

Well, here's my current setup:

Sophos SG135 Firewall - Is not 10Gbit capable so will need replacing.  I have some specific firewall requirements and I prefer a discrete firewall device so the 'free' router/firewall ain't gonna cut it.

2x 8 Port 1Gbit Switches (probably need to be 10+ ports, but could probably live with just 8)

4x PCs which will need 10BGit NICs

Admittedly I could do it a lot cheaper if I used the free router and bought some cheapy 10GBit switches, but... standards :)

I prefer to run decent quality gear at home because I hate troubleshooting my own systems :D

So to answer your question; How much am I prepared to spend?  If I could keep it under $2k I would be delighted, but I realise that might not be realistic given my exacting requirements :)

given the router is your ONT, unless you are prepared to go for SFP+ ports on a device and have that do your routing (i believe chorus are looking to allow this for hyper fiber)

SFP+ is fine; I'd prefer to terminate the fibre directly to my firewall if possible (or via a 'dumb' ONT as it is currently).

So do I!  And I'm working toward being able to do that, but, one step at a time :)

Not the 777, though, I'd prefer a HondaJet :D

However, in the meantime I can drive a fast sedan and take flying lessons.

If you're after some inspiration, this is what I'm using now in preparation for HyperFibre.

All 10G-ready aside from the router.

- Mikrotik RB3011; last remaining part of 1G-only gear I have, will have to be replaced with something that has at least 2x SFP+ cages

- Mikrotik CRS328 - really great to have the 10G trunk ports for servers / other 10G switches

- Mikrotik CRS305 - sits on my desk for PCs / laptops / etc. 4x SFP+ cages for 10G goodness

- Mellanox ConnectX-2 cards - really cheap way to add 10G capability to a PC, can be found on eBay for next to nothing

Mostly using 10G-SR SFP+ optics from FiberStore and Cisco DAC cables to connect everything up

Completely possible to do it for under 2k using soho gear that will be problem free

I 10gig'd my home network last year using an 8x sfp+ mikrotik switch, some 10gb mellanox network cards, a mixture of 10GTek DAC cables and 10GTek rj45 > SFP+ transceivers and it came in at about $750~ 

For routing I already had a pfsense firewall

You wouldn't need to replace your 1gb switches as you would keep them for the 1gb only devices and possibly even consolidate it down to one once you moves devices off it onto the 10g network.

Setup has been set and forget, I only have two computers, a NAS and a 1gb switch plugged into it so I didn't populate all 8 ports with transceiver to keep costs down .. I probably could have got away with the 4 port version of my switch but yolo'd it just in case my network expands later down the track

i'm on gig fibre and didn't need it but im a tech hobbyist and it was fun to play around with and learnt some new stuff along the way
