Unfortunately I was not told any way to fix the problem, I would have gladly fixed my own problem, but I didn't know what the problem was. I engaged a thrusting firm to give me a quote, it was going to cost $5,000 to dig the hole, but I couldn't go ahead as tbh I wasn't sure where to dig it to.

Anyway, it is fixed now, I have fiber, but here is a question for anyone still reading. The performance is terrible, so my TV which is hard wired to a draytec modem, and to the ont is getting about 50mbps on Spark max fiber. I did a spark diagnostic, and it is telling me I have 27 devices using my wi fi, this might be true if things like home speakers are included as devices? We have speakers through the house in the roof.

Anyone got any idea how I can improve the speed? It is simply a question of another fiber connection to a different port on the ont and another wi fi network, will they clash? Do I need to separate the work from the play? Can I get business fiber? Will that make a difference?

Things are better, but.....

Your network configuration seems a bit strange. Why do you have a Draytek modem and what I presume is a Spark supplied router?

To test the speed of the connection you need to plug a computer with a gigabit network card directly into the router. Ideally disconnect all other devices when you test and use a Speedtest app not a browser.

If that gives you the expected performance then it’s an internal network problem not a problem with the connection.

what speeds do you get from a laptop or desktop PC with a gigabit ethernet card, plugged directly into your modem/router? (assuming the LAN ports on your router are gigabit) Maybe the TV you are doing a test from only has a 10/100 NIC in it?

@Handle9, I don't have any Spark kit.

I have a DrayTec Vigor2927 router and a DrayTec VigorAP 1060C access point downstairs as well as a Vigor AP906 upstairs, and then two DrayTek mesh extenders, and a Edimax 8 port gigabit switch.

I shall try this "plug a computer with a gigabit network card directly into the router"

so I plugged my office lap top in to the Vigor AP906 upstairs and it is flying, 850mbs download.

so it is clearly getting to the house. So my phone shows 120mbps (Iphone 14), my TV shows 45mbps (LG something) and a games computer in the garage shows 30mbps. Am I expecting too much? Do different devices simply work at different speeds?

Hi yes welcome to reality, as you have found Spark as requested have delivered 900/500 to your house, any limitations are self inflicted, sounds like time to shop for new kit. But be aware many wireless devices are only single chain, so to expect more than 30Mb/s is dreaming.

my rule is anything that can be plugged in via ethernet is plugged in, that way i get full speed on my desktop pc, gaming console, media server etc. Wifi is usually the bottleneck unless your prepared to spend up large

Thanks. So the TV and the games PC are both hard wired, but they show 40 or 50mbs. But the laptop hardwired in the office through the draytek AP gets 850mbs.

I don’t care about wi fi speed in the house for phones etc, just need to understand why the things that are hard wired don’t all should the same speed.

whats inbetween the PC/TV and the Router, could a issue with a switch or cabling? I've had dodgy cables that have a loose pair in them before and that can cut the throughput to 100mbit or even 10mbit. Does your PC show as connected at 1gigabit in the NIC settings?

It is probable that the TV only has a 100 Mb/s LAN connection, and possibly the Gaming PC, so they would top out at that. Most TVs have absolutely no need for >100 Mb/s

Can you go into the interface of whichever bit of kit is handing out DHCP - often they will tell you what each device is connected at. Alternatively some of your draytek gear may only have 100 Mb/s LAN rather has gigabit.

Even if limited to 100Mb/s Ethernet, you usually see a really consistent 92-93Mb/s easily.

Are you sure the affected devices are hardwired to the router - it doesn't have to say go from the router to one of the APs via mesh wifi, then return to Ethernet?

99% of the time those are the problem.

The TV just may not have a very good CPU - i have seen many tv's that cant do a speed test of more than 20-30mbits. They are only designed to be "good enough" for playing a video.

Your wifi set up is the reason you can't get decent speeds. Mesh extenders (with wireless backhaul) are only going to help things so much (and probably not at all).

If you are connecting a significant number of devices, there will be a lot of chatter and therefore the speed on each device will be lower than the maximum. Remember, when you have two devices sharing the wifi, each ends up with less than half the bandwidth. When you have four devices all trying to transmit, you'll be lucky if each gets a fifth of the available bandwidth. And that's before you consider the physics of electromagnetic waves - distance reduces strength and going through solid objects reduces strength.

My solution was to buy a couple of GWN7660 APs and now my wifi is flawless throughout my (rather large) new house. E.g. 900 Mbps on the iphone.
