I wonder how many of them know what connects Starlinks base station north of Auckland to the internet????

Nope, you're not fooling me... It's turtles all the way down!

What does it need a base station for? Everything's up in The Cloud these days!

[some Facebook groups = every rural community group]

Other favourites include:

  • OMG I SAW A DRONE, LOOK OUT THEY ARE GOING TO ROB YOU
  • OMG A CAR POINTED IT'S HEADLIGHTS UP MY DRIVE, LOOK OUT THEY ARE GOING TO ROB YOU
  • OMG THERE WAS A GROUP OF KIDS ON BMX BICYCLES RIDING AROUND THE NEIGHBOURHOOD. THEY MIGHT DIE!
  • OMG OUR RATES ARE SO HIGH. LOOK OUT THE GUMMINT IS ROBBING YOU
  • OMG I HAVE HANDMADE SOAPS TO SELL... LOOK OUT THEY ARE GOING TO ROB YOU
  • OMG What day is bin day? Oh, I just saw the truck nevermind. I don't think they were trying to rob me though.

Sorry, had to get that off my chest.

You forgot my favourite - "Did anyone hear that loud banging? I think it was gunshots". I always try to reply that yes, I heard it and it was definitely gunshots, no mistake about it. For the record, loud banging in our suburb is statistically never gunshots....

My second favourite is how the moment anyone ever has something to give away, the community instantly becomes the most humble and polite people in the world - "May I please be considered?", or "It's been such a hard year for me financially being a solo mum and my angelic child [insert name here] would love this if you were to choose to bless us with this item" - and then the same item ends up swivelled to FB Marketplace hours later asking $100 LOL.

[Edit to swing back on topic: My other favourite - "Is anyone else having problems with their WiFi?"]

Oh yeah - my community is within earshot of an army shooting range... Guns, hand grenades etc... So there are a lot of "Did you hear those bangs?" here!

Cheers - N

Starlink has more consistent speeds than fibre?

A

I know a couple of people here with very underwhelming fiber connections that drop to 20 or 30 Mbps at times and even stall completely sometimes.  I don't know if it's a fault or a consequence of the way our area is connected.

I'd bet what they think is 'fibre' is actually VDSL... That description reeks of rural copper.

Either that or fibre with a crappy wifi setup.
