Careful! All that unconstrained broadband will create noise interference in the cable sheath and lead to farmers and suburbanites having to forego DSL.

[See Telecom's submission to the Commerce Commission, in which it opposes TelstraClear's application for full-rate DSL. Makes you wonder how they'll handle ADSL2+ then.]

Thank you for your post, but without saying which plan you are on, we cannot compare the actual speed you have with the offered speed you should get....

I know we don't use DSL (God bless CityLink) but i thought i would show how we are obviously under-promised on our connection!! We are on a Connect4 plan (4mbps each way):

Download Speed: 4296 kbps (537 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 6325 kbps (790.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 4627 kbps (578.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

not sure what connection/plan, but i suspect it could be a fibre corporate connection, as i'm with Christchurch City Council, and the phone connections are with TelstraClear.

Internet is my backyard...

Download Speed: 756 kbps (94.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 572 kbps (71.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Im with Dunedin City Council. Each user has bandwidth limited so i guess i doesnt really count for much

download peaked at about 3200 so we must have got the upgrade.
upload speed is rubbish though

the upgrade from 10Gig 2Mb down plan

Hey, my first post!

Anyway, I ran this test twice, once last night about 9pm when everyone seems to be on it, and again this morning at 7am, when it is quiter. Big difference:

9pm:

Down - 532
Up - 192

7am:

Down - 1923
Up - 182

I am on Xtra 2MB/256 (one of the 'older' plans).

Interesting note - when ADSL was first released in NZ, we lived in Remuera which was the first exchange, and we where the 8th customer! Back then there was no speed limit or data caps. The data caps where put on pretty quickly, at 800MB, then 2c/MB. I don't think there was any flat rate plans. The speed limits down to 2MB came latter, as more people signed up I suppose.

There where also 'specials' such as weekends with no data caps. This was back when Napster was really big.

Also, the installed took 2 days! There where no line filters at first, and the phone line was shocking after eveything was hooked up. Amazing how far it has come that an install can be done without someone visiting a house.

Down 3205 (400 KB/sec)
Up 6054 (756 KB/sec) !!!!!

WOW!

I ran this multiple times, and each time the upload speed was higher than the download.

It's wierd, web browsing is not amazingly fast, like you would think it would be (I work in Airdale street, where the exchange is, you would think it would be one of the best places, after all, the Southern Cross cable comes into this building).

But those upload speeds make me think it is just uncapped.

If I could give you bandwidth I would! But I am just a contractor ;-)

BTW, when I lived in Remuera we had the Telecom Fibre/Coxial network installed on our street, and into our house (giving us cable TV for about 3 months) before they pulled the plug. Anyone know what is happening with this network? All that bandwidth would far surpass ADSL technologies. I heard there was a cable TV station in east Auckland, but that's all?

Telecom pulled out of the cable network and opted instead to go with ADSL
