..and tell me the result.

There is a brand new speed test on NZDSL web page measuring UL and DL speed as well.
Please do your test and tell me which plan do you have and where do you live (suburb, city)
I wonder how the speed changes in different locations.

I am on Adventure Pro plan (512kbps/3.5Mbps=3500kbps) and I live in Parnell, Auckland.

My test result is:

122kbps Upload and 1882kbps Download

Hmmm interesting, isnt it?
Has cheaper and faster internet been arrived to NZ? Not for me so far.

At the moment, I'm getting 260kbps and 40kbps on my 256/128kbps flatrate connection.

Aloha:Has cheaper and faster internet been arrived to NZ? Not for me so far.

I still don't understand other than pure spin why they market it as cheaper and faster internet.

If I am to stay on the same plan that I am currently on, its price will double more or less in price.

The upload rates have barely changed in some cases people have been moved from 192kbps upload to 128kbps.... faster indeed? Its only on the top end plans where they are generious enough to up the upload to 512kbps.

The only 'fast' aspect is the 3.5mbps download rate which quite a lot of people here have never reached (people with full rate ADSL get faster speeds) and with quite a few friends here - THEY GOT FASTER SPEEDS ON 2.x mbps plans! Caps to match the speeds haven't improved much if at all.

The latency is poor as well. When using Inspire fiber connection, I could get pings of 9-15ms to a few CS servers.... with Xtra - I'm lucky if its 70ms... with Orcon I'm lucky if its 90ms! In Tianjin, China on ADSL- I could get 10ms pings.

So where is this "broadband revolution"? Why aren't "The people getting what they want" (paraphrased from T3G ad vaguely remember and from Sunday programme)?

For me, its a fallacy to believe things have improved - rather it seems that its just a means to keep the commerce commission off their backs.

3,336kbps down, 3,262kbps up. Whoops, that's the WiMAX connection. Hang on... 1,923kbps down, 169kbps up. Xtra, 2M/192kbps plan, Devonport on Auckland's North Shore.

Having been on DSL since Telecom launched it, I concur. The service has not improved as such. The only difference is that you no longer risk financial suicide by using it.

I havent seen any speed over 2Mbps so far.

Where is the 3.5Mbps???? Why they dont change their ads to 2Mbps instead? At least it would be true.

Upload Speed: 100 kbps (12.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

I generally get better results than this and I constantly get speeds of 430KB/sec when downloading

I live in lower mornington, Dunedin I think less than 1Km from exchange.

I'm on the 2MB/196 plan also... I've run the test over the last couple of days and the most I've gotten is 1950/195! I live about 700 metres from the exchange. The above speeds are about the same as I've been getting since I got the current plan I'm on (about a year)

Increase in speed.. yeah whatever

I live oustide Invercargill, approx 3.5Km from an exchange which I believe is connected to the Invercargill exchange. This is approx what I get all the time but then this is my plan as well - Xtra 10GB 2M/192K, so no complaints. But not going to upgrade as I don't needs the speed increase. I 'download', run a webserver, and upload other data to other sites via FTP with no issues.

Comment: Higher speeds are only needed by those 5% of broadband users who gobble up ~55% of our total usage downloading 'content' like TV programs, movies, and music from overseas ... not what I would call 'business' related usage for a 'Knowledge Economy'.

Sorry for probably going off topic, as an excellent topic.
The whole 'broadband' debate needs to be taken more seriously, and not let emotive issues cloud the important challenges to our 4 million people. Yes we do only have 4 million people, not 40 million.

Oh rubbish. By that argument, we don't need to have anything beyond 8.6k or less. Why aren't you on modem dialup?

What's wrong with downloading TV programmes and movies and music anyway? It's like saying people should only read parts of a newspaper or watch TV for half an hour a day...

Yep got to agree with juha on this one.

As for not requiring the speed increases for "'business related' usage for a 'Knowledge Economy'", rubbish to this completely.

Small businesses makeup a HUGE portion of the NZ economy and more and more of these businesses are requiring remote access to their internal networks. Have you tried (without frustration) to competently sustain a workable VPN connection or TS session or a Remote Web Workplace session concurrently with at least one other workmate through the 128kbps uplink from your company's DSL connection? I think not.

Upload Speed: 114 kbps (14.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Just measured. And I am on a 3.5/512 plan as you see in my first comment. I pay 69.95 for that.
For me this service is a completely rip-off.

I'd like to see more test results from more people..

You are not guaranteed 3.5Mbps, that it the theoretical maximum you can get. If read Telecoms terms or your ISPs im sure they will say you are likely to receive less!

Also other factors affect your speed: line condition, modem, your PC. But you lot should all know that!
Had problems with awful speed a couples of years ago. Turned out it was the lines inside the house, so had them replaced by TNZ and no worries since. Its also not Telecoms fault if somebody lives quite a distance from the exchange and their service suffers as a result.

For the record it was xtra who were advertising faster, cheaper broadband so if your ISP is now charging you more than than you were paying before that could be because they werent the ones advertising faster, cheaper. Thats like me going to Pizza Hutt and complaining about the price of their pizza because Dominos have advertised cheaper pizza.

And as an xtra customer im am very happy with FASTER and CHEAPER broadband that i am getting. I getting close 1.5Mbps faster and im not paying more for it.
