I do not trust these figures from Southern Cross any more than Telecom for obviouse reasons. I am surprised people are so quick to believe these figures including the media (actually not surprised there).

Given the amount of data that is moved across that cable I would expect that those figures aren't to much off the mark.

You want the price to go down then we have to start moving some real data.

That won't happen untill we can get data to and from users.

For a start the cost is measured in capacity sold not GB's. I "assume" they are using some sort of GB's moved over maximum load/time calculation.

So you trust a company 50% owned by NZ Telecom and run by an ex(re deployed) Telecom manager to give you accurate figures on the TRUE cost INT capacity? umm lol I don't know what to say.

Lets keep in mind these $1-2$ prices are not independently verified by anyone other than Southern Cross, the Other ISP's are merely repeating what they are CHARGED by Southern Cross/Telecom.

These costs "may" be fair, however you would have to be very trusting to believe it without some sort of independent verification given Telecoms history lol.

This whole debate has been had before time and time before. I don't know about on GeekZone, but the debate has been had on AU boards.

I don't understand why you're even questioning their costs.

There are pleanty of other links and any number of providers who can be called on to provide data. But what's the point? Most retail providers are keyed into Telecom and aren't going to rock the boat to much are they?

1mbps international transit is approx $300-400/month to buy currently, dependant on volume you buy of course.

These are only rough figures.

Nice statement, now how "exactly" do you know this? I am not talking what Southern Cross charge.

and Dongould, you trust a near monopoly to give you accurate costings? I will challenge each and every person that quote these figures blindly in every forum I am in.

You say that like a monopoly is a bad thing. Not always. If someone wants to build a competing pipeline into NZ then so be it. Will it bring you lower prices in the short to medium term? Probably not, they will also need to recover cost and make a return on their investment. The long term, well one would say prices would stay where they are. Compared to reducing, though the number of users (economies) and an increase in the volume of traffic under the current status quo.

Economies of Scale are important for major infrastructure.

In short, not all monopolies are bad, they have their place, like it or not.

Rant all you like. If you want to know what the actual costings are then work them out. It's not that hard to do.

Have you had a look at my costings for local service delivery on my web site at www.tcn.bowenvale.co.nz ?

International costs have stuff all to do with the retail cost of data.
