I have the serious misfortune of being on Ihug, how I envy those who say that they get dosconnected once a day...lets just say I'm having to reboot my router every hour or 2.
I'm on the 15gb plan which I stupidly thought was 15Gb all day but no.......its 5Gb when you want i connection and 10Gb when your asleep.........of course the 5Gb gets used real fast so they limit you to 56k.......so you set up a download to run overnight....and of course at 2am when they switch you back to 3.5Mb it crashes your router, so in the morning you get up to see bugger all has downloaded.
My only fix for the BS so far is to set a timer on the router so at 2.10 my router gets switched off and back on again 10 minutes later.....and reapeats this every 2 hours to make sure i get my downloads.........welcome to 1975....wheres my Earth wind and fire LP?

One of the reasons why I didn't switch to Ihug. Their plans look ok datawise but when you start looking into them, they're like an onion - the more layers you pull away, the more you start to cry. Their on peak/off peak system really sucks and if you want to make the most of it I'd recommend using task schduler and task-kill to lanuch and close your download programs during that period.

That and the blame game that a lot of these ISP's like to play. Their favorite saying is "Its Telecoms fault, we can't do anything from here... please wait a couple of hours".

(I switched from Orcon to Xtra because I was sick of it)

Perhaps a poll on "can i fit a 302g up the ihug managing directors a**e" would be in order?.......their office is down the road from me so I may have to be the one to take up the challenge

At mums there is an ihug connection, up till about 3 weeks ago it was still on the 256k one, we upgraded to 3.5 meg, and would you believe it, browsing is actually slower then it was on 256k. Downloads eventually go a little faster but not anywhere near 3.5 megs.

I couldnt even get azuerus to work properly when I was there yesterday, it keeps going red as if its firewalled, which is not the case since its a USB modem and azureus is allowed in the firewall. Used to work fine.

Just a long shot...
Can those of you with logs take the time of the disruption in (minutes and seconds past the hour ), and mod 300 it?

For example, suppose one happened at 20:39:29, that's 39:29 after the hour = 39*60+29=2369 past the hour, mod 300 is 269.
Do the same for other events (preferably events close in time) and see if the remainder has a pattern.
(alternatively, divide by 300 and look at the fractional part only. 2369/300=7.897, fractional part is 0.897)
If the remainder comes out similar, it means there is a 300 second cycle in there somewhere...

I've been with xtra for about 3 years now. I have an ADSL plan and have never had a problem with them (except for their low cap and high pricing). Two months ago I started getting dropped from the net up to 3-4 times a day. I have rung Xtra and Telecom to complain and they say it is my equipment. I was even told that if I want better internet service to get a better modem. Are they joking? Are they trying to tell me that the 302g modem that they supplied is not good enough for the service they sell? They are funny (not).

I told them that I could accept it being a problem with my equipment if I was the only one having the problem. I normally play Guild Wars online and a friend runs a voice over server for me. We all get D/C at the same time from everything including our local voice over server. We are not all with Xtra, some are with Ihug and some with others like Worldnet. There are just to many people I know having the same problem at the same times for this to be blamed on my equipment, and I have told Xtra and Telecom this.

At Xtra' request I did tracert test and forwarded the information to Telecom. fid-dom.aksw7.global-gateway.net.nz which is the 4th hop on the list frequently returns a 150-250ms result and at the odd time I get an * result. There is definity a problem on the network but neither Telecom or Xtra are will to acknowledge or fix the problem. 250ms response times on national traffic on an ADSL plan is pathetic. The average should be 60-70ms.

This has only been a problem since the government announced unbundling the local loop. In my opinion it's Telecom packing a sad and trying to make everyones life a missery so they can turn around and say we told you it wouldn't work.

As I said it's my opinion. Do you have a better explaination of why ADSL in this country has turn to soup in the last couple of months? And I have experienced just how unhappy Telecom are through their billing service. I thought this problem was localised to where I live, but after finding these forums and seeing just how many others are having the same problem as me and my friends I am convinced there is a major problem with the network and Telecom do know about it, they're just not willing to admit it or try and fix it.

Telecom say they have monitored my line for serveral days and have not found any problems with it, yet the tracert's that they told me to perform commonly come back with very bad response times and 99% of the time at the same gateway.

The tracert doesn't prove anything. If you do a tracert to geekzone.co.nz you will see a "*". It's not a problem with "The Tubes", it's just a firewall blocking some stuff.

There's no conspiracy. Telecom knows that by providing a bad ADSL service people would turn to alternatives, like Woosh or Vodafone (if available in your area).

Could it be that Xtra has problems (as we know it does from time to time), or IHUG?

By the way, this is of topic, so please open a new thread. The discussion is not Xtra DSL services (which seems to be your case), but IHUG.

This is my point, it's not just Ihug having this problem. I have friends who are on Ihug having the same problems that I read of here, and the same problems I am having, and we have them at the same time. I know this is an Ihug thread, but the problem extends beyond Ihug.

If people just want to sit here and complain about Ihug and not look at potential problems outside of Ihug, thats not going to help anybody. Tracert's are not 100% I agree and if poor response times come down to a firewall somewhere on the network, then don't you think that should be looked into?

I have already shown you that Ihug is not the only ISP experiencing this problem. Why don't we all keep a log of when we get D/C regardless of our ISP and see if there is a pattern or some commonality with this.

Would it not be better to put our heads together rather than tell me to start another thread because it's not about Ihug???

I had another major issue of a drop off connectivity again last night at around 2230.
I rang Ihug-call overload message and when I spoke to CSP after a 7 minute wait(not bad) he said its an authentication issue and its with Telecom. This was the answer I got last time too

So we are no better off
