Talkiet: If you have a business need for fibre today, then go for it... As has been pointed out these were recently dropped dramatically to be in line with UFB pricing. It's conceivable that competition in the RSP space may drive prices down a little with UFB P2P availability... But that's a total unknown - there's also a chance that the extra investment may mean prices through RSPs are higher than today... Again a guess, but not an impossibility.

Cheers -N

Remember as well that the wholesale access costs for most residential UFB plans will increase by roughly $1 per year between now and 2019. This also has to be factored into RSP/ISP pricing, as margins are so low at the bottom end that $3 per month per customer at the end of a 36 month term may be a good chunk of the profit on a $70 entry level plan.

Long story short there is a huge price difference between shared/contended network access and dedicated network access.

Business fibre zones are largely existing p2p fibre.

Your best bet is to contact a list of ISP's and describe your requirements to an account manager and get a range of quotes. Pricing and offerings can vary a lot and there are lots of different options eg: un-metered national/domestic might be something you want... burstable 95th percentile billing might suit your traffic flow/pattern rather than a CIR etc etc.

Usual suspects would be Maxnet, Unleash, ICONZ, Orcon, Telstraclear, Telecom, Xnet/WxC

Ragnor, but if they are all starting at $380+GST and then data on top, It's still going to go over the $500 mark for sure. It's such a shame I am outside of the VDSL Network, it meets my needs and isn't quite as prohibitive.

The deal I have been offered is very reasonable I believe based on what I now know is the starting point, I was just trying to understand the basics behind the pricing. What I wanted to know was where the starting point for pricing was..

The installation costs and required length of contract are also a bit of a problem too. Telstra had reasonable (relatively) rates, but wanted a 3 year contract which is quite a commitment.

Telstra don't need a 3 year contract, generally speaking they will do 1 year contract with a greater installation cost. Which ISP were you looking at to provide service over Telstra fibre (or were you looking at Telstra themselves?)

Zeon: Unleash quoted me, and after a site inspection they (telstra) said they would only do it with a 3 year contract. It's not the first time I have had this problem with them direct (Same thing happened to two clients on a VDSL install).

What I am confused about is how one interprets the Chorus UFB map - where I am situated I sit in an 'UFB' but I'm nether part of Year 1 or Year 2 - so what does that mean for me? i'm left high and dry? that the delivery of UFB will be sitting some time between now and 2019? Chorus, quite frankly, has done an appalling job explaining how the whole role out will actually work :(

You need to remember that the initial focus for the UFB project has never been residential. To quote the front page of the UFB website.

The Government's objective is to accelerate the roll-out of Ultra-Fast Broadband to 75 percent of New Zealanders over ten years, concentrating in the first six years on priority broadband users such as businesses, schools and health services, plus green field developments and certain tranches of residential areas.

It's quite simple if you are not in year 1 or 2 you are TBA sometime before 2019 between year 3 to 7

Unfortunately rolling out fibre to a million premises in NZ it's not magic and doesn't happen overnight.

It's very disappointing to see that you house with only FIBRE connection (no copper wires at all) is outside of UFB yesr 1 and 2.

If you are already in a fibre zone (ie one of the older ones) then I see no reason  why Orcon can't provide you a connection now. Sounds more like an Orcon limitation if they can't atm - too much PR spin and not actually having everything in place.

Existing Chorus greenfields areas are not currently part of the UFB network and don't have UFB pricing.

Yep, but that's a different issue to the other people generally complaining "wah, my house is not in year 1 or 2"

Oh really why not? That seems very bizarre?

I thought conversion of these existing "Brightspark" fibre estate trials to UFB pricing would have been in the agreement between Chorus and Crownfibre.. but no one seems to know what's supposed to be happening with them.

Personally if I lived in one I would be hassling everyone: my local MP, InternetNZ, TUANZ, TCF, ComCom etc to find out what's going on.

I live on a street which has both UFB year one and business fibre.

Do i wait for my ISP release UFB plans or something? (slingshot)

Year ONE UFB is scheduled for the end of April
