Hi There!

My office is in the Chorus UFB Zones and "Business Fibre" Zones according to the latest maps at Choruses Website.

I am not sure what that means though. I am not in the 1 or 2 year zones. Is the Chorus UFB zones the existing Fibre Network that Chorus has relinquished which isn't as cheap as UFB pricing?

Cheers

Chorus UFB Zone = Eventual coverage by the end of 2019.

Business Fibre = Existing pre-UFB fibre coverage. I'm not sure about pricing and access around this.

Chorus dropped their HSNS and fibre pricing in the middle of last year as part of their agreement with CFH. P2P access prices over existing fibre are now identical to UFB pricing.

Why  is it business only? what if my house was covered by their existing network, witch it is.. is there something stopping me from connecting to it with a residential plan?
I mean, it's fiber so what gives?

Fibre != fibre

The UFB network is GPON, the existing Chorus network architecture is essentially all P2P connections.

From what I understand:

Year 1 is due to be completed in the middle of this Year.

Year 2 dates include the last half of this year and the first half of the next.

Chorus UFB Zones are areas to be connected in future.

Business Fibre is areas with fibre already available (Would have to contact ISP's over the availability of Residential connections in these areas)

I could be wrong but that's my interpretation of the data.

Well prices for the fibre already available (gpon etc) do not align even remotely to those offered by WXC and Orcon recently. I figured there would be an additional cost, but I didn't imagine it to be 3x or 4x in some instances. Should this be the case?

I suspect in this case Steve has it nailed.

GPON is what's been chosen for residential fibre and to be very crude about it, it's a shared access technology, with the P2P (point to point) fibre currently in use in many places for business use is more expensive - not least of which because it burns a whole port on the access nodes.

I'm pretty sure there's a description of these on the CFH site somewhere but it's late and I have a kitchen to deconstruct so I can't go looking now.

Cheers - N

Thanks. Yes I am comparing business as I am interested for my business. I suspect you are right about the P2P nature of it, still is it expected to be 3-4x more expensive?

Sorry I don't know the actual numbers offhand but I expect that they are listed on the CFH website somewhere.

As an indication though, 24 GPON customers can be connected through a single port while a gigabit port would be dedicated to a single P2P customer.

You're not comparing apples with apples, you're comparing apples with oranges.

Access costs over existing Chorus fibre are identical to those offered ofer UFB, ie a 100Mbps connection with 0 CIR (that is additional) costs $380 + GST.

You're comparing the costs of GPON plans with P2P - these are two totally different things. GPON plans can't be offered over existing Chorus P2P infrastructure because the network architecture is completely different.

So if I wanted a 30 or 50Mbps connection over the existing Chorus Fibre, my base rate would still be 380+GST + Margin + DATA? Or the base rate would be lower if I want a lesser Circuit?

Really I want a 30/30/150GB Connection somehow, cost effectively (In an ideal world).

Probably $600 minimum. If you are within Citylink areas it may be possible

If your idea of "cost effective" is UFB prices then the answer is no. UFB pricing is only available in GPON networks where port costs can be shared between multiple users. This is part of the reason why existing P2P fibre networks have higher costs.

Ok well, the $380 you mentioned, is every circuit provisioned as a 100Mbit? Or if I only order 30Mbps then the vendor pays less than $380?

Read... This will answer your question... And interestingly, it will answer a surprisingly number of questions people ask on here about UFB. If it helps, consider this a secret link to a document the general public shouldn't be able to see.

http://www.crownfibre.govt.nz/media/17725/wlfc%20reference%20offer%20price%20list%20-%2021843941%20v%201.pdf

It's for a specific LFC, but the pricing is as per reference.

If you're really interested, read more stuff on this page.
