I strongly recommend you get a splitter installed, costs $150 just ring telecom.
The spliter will fix you problem and give you a higher end speed than you'll get doing it yourself because they put it at the earliest point on the line possible.

plus you sound like you have a big mess, spliter is a much better idea, if need you can run etra long ethernet cables or wifi with no loss in speed if this makes you router too far away.

I have to agree that placing a filter as soon as the line enters the house is a good idea. But just to clarify, there is no actual difference between a splitter and a filter, just the fact that a splitter is installed at a point, and a seperate line to the adsl device and alll other pots devices happens at that point. The micro filters and the more expensive ones that telecom may install essentially do the same job although they often have more filter stages and can handle more line current (more pots devices off hook at the same time), however in a typical domestic situation where we have a fax machine, and one cordless phone basestation all of this is a bit of a nothing.

What does help is that there are as few stubs on the line once the filter is installed, dont worry about all the stub lengths in the pots circuits post the filter, but do remove all unnessecary stubs in the direct line from the filter, only one line to the adsl modem should exist once the filter is installed.

Phone cable has 2 or 3 pairs in it, therefore you can place a wired in filter at the first point point near the cable entry, and run all the pots devices on one pair and the adsl circuits on another. In classic NZ homes the cable enters to a point and then just daisy chains (and sometimes splits) off to all the jacks in the house. Identify the first jack in the house and place a commercial filter there from that point place the ADSL (direct) circuit on one pair and the pots circuit (post filter) on the another pair, you can then run the line where needed, but if there is a split in the line, dont take the adsl circuit where it need not to go, make it as direct as possible to the site of the modem and no further. The less joins in the direct adsl circuit the better.

Commercial grade ADSL filters as used by Telecom can be obtained from MasterTrade and other electrical outlets, they cost around $50, a commonly available one is made by Marc Magnetics. To install it use the IDC Gel connectors (also from MasterTrade) just insert the wires and squeeze them with a pair of pliers ensuring the wires are secure.

Shin I would wonder why your uplink attenuation is so high (63dB) I would have expected a fiqure around 30dB for this, once again as the uplink circuit is at the low end of the band it would suggest that something is dodgy with the wiring in the house, or a pots device is still sittting directly across the line.

My last 584 kbps with 87kbpps upload Like this no matter what time 8am,4pm, 1am
I'm in Burnside in CHCH and get the same regardless of any tweak.

Not sure why but if I do a trace on or off shore it seems to route through IHUG I'm not with or have I ever been with IHUG.

Hi everyone, a total noob here.

I've been with Xtra for a while and jumped a the chance to upgrade to the 'go large' plan. What a mistake this was! I've been struggling all week and now any sort of video streaming has crapped out. Not good. So I've been running a few speed tests and domestic traffic is fine - it just hits treacle when it gets offshore.

Here's some of my download speeds and the locations:

Auckland: 3973 kb/s
Melbourne: 131 kb/s
LA: 353 kb/s
San Jose: 129 kb/s
London: 196 kb/s

In short, I'm not impressed.

Needed to get that off my chest ... lol

I am on the Ihug 2mb plan.
Test takin at 9.30PM Saturday Night

Upload Speed: 131 kbps (16.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Saying this is showed 298.1KB/Sec on NetMeter so I dunno what that means?

On Xtra Go Large, now getting 60kbs down and 66kbs up. HelpDesk admits problem with the plan but no resolution in sight as yet. I did get a month free in compensation.

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.
