@varix: I feel for you bro!! That may be the worst possible outcome of a Chorus visit!!

If I were you I would start taking screenshots of the line issues (with dates & times) as reported by the Fritz, then at least you have some evidence! If there is definitely a pattern of issues around the same time daily, then maybe you can convince chorus to come out at that time?

Its pretty crap but I figure there is one of two things that will happen.

1)It will stay stable now, in which case there was a fault because it sure as hell wasn't stable until he showed up (I have plenty of screen shots from before he showed up today), and thus I wont be paying any money to Chorus or Snap.

2) It will go back to crapping out all the time as per usual and so there is still a fault that has not been fixed and thus I wont be paying any money to Snap or Chorus.

So I guess you can say either way I wont be paying anyone any money for this entire crap fest that I have been going through.
So far we are stable but will see what happens tomorrow morning, I am still hoping to get a loan Fritz from Snap just to see how it goes too.

Time for an update I suppose, I imagine you are all sick of hearing about this haha. I guess its a good learning curve for people to understand that VDSL can be very sensitive compared to ADSL.

Got a loan Fritz from Snap on Friday and put it in Friday night. Net came up OK but come 11am or so on Saturday it dropped off again. Called Snap and they booked a Chorus tech again for Sunday afternoon, pretty awesome that they came out on a long weekend.

This Chorus dude was awesome, went to so much more effort than the last dude, it also helped that it was playing up when he arrived rather than behaving. He didnt have the VDSL software on his test box so he was just looking at the stats on the Fritz.

I showed him how I had that RFI spike (as pictured in previous posts of mine) and he seemed to think if he could get rid of that it would be a start.

He started by connecting the Fritz straight to the ETM, ruling out the internal wiring of the house, and it came up just as crap as usual, phew, not an internal wiring issue. He also said it was super retarded that I had to put a VDSL splitter in as it wasnt doing anything at all.

Next he ran a cable from the fritz straight around the corner along the footpath and plugged it straight into the cabinet. Wish he could have left it like that haha, modem synced up at 49.8 mbit down and 10 up. Perfect sync rate, and the specturm showed just a huge smooth chunk, no RFI or anything. This means its likely an issue with cabling on the street.

So he went and looked at the cabling diagrams on his laptop and traced the wire from our ETM to a post on the footpath next to our mailbox. He checked the terminations and decided he would switch the pairs over. So he changed from blue white to red and black.

Modem synced up and boom the RFI spike was gone. Sync rate was down to 42mbit down and 10 up but everything was looking good.

Modem has stood up for nearly 48 hours now and hasnt missed a beat, have not had a single CRC error and SNR Margin has stayed solid and not shifted.

Here are some screens of the connection as it sits now:

That's looking the way it should, congrats. Unfortunately the moral of the story is that it is simple luck of the draw as to whether you get a competent Chorus technician or not. I'd be inclined to try to lay a complaint about the first tech, especially if they made any noises about charging you for that callout. But since it's sorted now I wouldn't blame you for letting it slide.

I wouldn't let it slide. 1 tech or 2. The issue ended up being in the street cable meaning I wouldn't be paying a cent to Chorus. The problem was completely in their area of blame. If it was your house wiring causing the issue they wouldn't just go "oh don't worry we wont charge you" so don't be left paying for a mistake on their side of the fence.

Yeah there is no way I am paying anything. I am going to let the modem sit up for a good 7 days before I call Snap back and let them know its behaving.

Good idea and looking good! Keep us updated.

I find it quite rich if they say they won't come look at your wiring without a master filter, then tell you having a master filter is silly and not required! Funny how the Customer-ISP-Chorus relationship seems to turn into a game of chinese whispers at times...Good idea. Quite rich that they won't come look at it without a master filter, then tell you

Faults like this are hard to find for a chorus tech being that if you dot turn up at the right time when its happening its hard to find the fault - most of the time theyll go to the cabinet and peform a line test - if the line is within chorus specs then most echs will sign off being no fault found because simply there is no fault -

Also being a black and red pair sounds like fault is in the 049 cable to your house at a guess - unless ur fed from another terminal

Maybe varix should try invoicing them for the filter. Use their pricing. "I had to do $400 worth of work to get you guys to come out and diagnose this fault in your network so you owe me $400".

^ I like this idea haha. Pretty insane, cost me $20 and took about 5 minutes. Charging $400 is just daylight robbery. Will update once I have spoken to Snap and see what they have to say.

8 days of up time! Woke up this morning to a DLM drop. Went from DLM6 to DLM2 in one hit which is sweet. Bring on DLM1 next time around!

I think it's more likely you're now on DLM-4 and the Fritz is misreporting it. I predict that in 2 or 3 days time you'll have a resync but it will stay on DLM2 (really it will actually go from DLM-4 to DLM-2). If your error rate is good enough you'll go to DLM-1 2 or 3 days after that.

Incidentally I am still on DLM-1. My last resync was Sept 28 so I was expecting a resync a few days ago. If it stays on DLM-1 for another week I'll try dropping my SNRM target (it's currently 14db). My current error rate is 0.34 CRC/min so it's at the upper end of what we thought the range for DLM-1 was.

Ah I see, I remember reading that you werent supposed to be able to skip steps on DLM so was a little confused. My SNRM is hovering between 11 and 12db. Is this OK?

I have not had a single CRC error in the last 8 days. All four boxes just constantly sit on 0.

Spot on stevehodge. Had a resync this morning and the stats stayed the same, sync speed went up a tiny bit. Probably on DLM-2 now? Starting to get a few CRC errors popping up now but sitting at 0.01 per minute currently, so very low. Will be interesting to see what the CRC/min goes to when it jumps to DLM-1.

One thing to note was that before this mornings resync when it was likely on DLM-4 I noticed bitswap was on. After resync bitswap is off. Bitswap is not related to DLM though is it? Does bitswap affect sync speeds or latency?

Fingers crossed for DLM-1 in a few days.

Nice one... with your stats I'm picking 2 days and it'll change to DLM1 ;-)
