You can't tell me that the cabinet was taken out by a safe responsible driver. It was either a maniac whonwas unlucky enough to lose it and hit the cabinet or someone deliberatly aiming for it.

I think that critical infrastructure like that cabinet should be armoured against attacks like this in the same way that every pharmacy and similar place is. If that comes at the expense of those stupid enough to try ramming it I see no downside.

Otherwise may as well mandate airbags fitted to every tree and building alongside the roads.

Playing devils advocate here it is always possible that the car had a mechanical issue (e.g accelerator stuck under carpets) so not necessarily an idiot. Plenty of old ladies accidentally slam on the accelerator instead of the brakes, have slow reactions, and cause serious damage.

That said, this particular incident happened out West, so I think we can make some fairly safe assumptions about the driver being at fault

whereas if it happened on the north shore it'd be a malfunction with the car?

if people slam on the accelerator instead of the brakes they shouldn't be driving.  and if they think that hard braking is the best solution when losing traction in the rain, then they're just going to slide.

if it really is plenty then some kind of education and testing should be done.  are woman worse then men at driving as they advance in years?

Too bloody right! You don't just 'wander' over a cabinet like that. The prick who did this was obviously speeding.
Hope he (or she) gets the full replacement bill as well as paying compensation to all the residents who are now without critical services.

if you're lucky his car will be impounded, but chances are no-one knows who did it.

Of course, that's just being silly. But most other things placed roadside that are likely to get hit are mandated to be safe - for example, street signs and metal light posts are designed to break away, concrete power poles are designed to crumble, all in order to prevent deaths where possible. Severe injuries cost the country a VAST amount of money.

I think we can all agree the motorist was totally at fault here, but lets not be bloody stupid either, you're still saying you would prefer humans to be maimed or killed so you can keep jerking it to internet porn.

Probably not their car, some one was "drive it like you stole it" because they actually did steal it or something.

I wonder if chorus actually did any crash testing with the cabinets at all when choosing the designs?

Absolutely agree that they shouldn't be on the road, but the fact is that they are right now, and richms was suggesting that the roadside gear shouldn't consider the lives of driver that hit it

The westie thing was a joke

No, I am saying I expect that someone that was driving like an idiot should wipe just themselves out instead of critical services for 100s or 1000s of residents. Its nothing to do with internet porn at all.

The idiot could just have easily hit another car, people on the footpath, a power transformer and got electrocuted etc. They can choose to drive in an unsafe manner and get the risks that result from it, they can choose to buy a car with more advanced safety features to protect themselves if there is another maniac on the road. Chorus only have a duty to protect their equipment and the services that they provide, and to not allow their equipment to get destroyed when someone attacks it.

Im not suggesting that chorus should put giant spikes sticking out of it or other unsafe things, just to make it sturdy enough and well enough protected to help with its survival when hit by a vehicle.

Maybe I run a business from home making internet porn? You never know these things and what effect these outages have on the livelyhood of those affected by it.

InstallerUFB: If a Yr1/2 Chorus UFB cabinet got bowled there would be more damage and take longer to fix than a FFTN cabinet in respect that apart from replaceing the physical cabinet (depending on how hard it was hit ) which has to be done from below ground and built up in layers, each of the 26way microduct tube bundles would have to be cut and a section replaced (depending on strenching - they are clamped to sections of the cabinet base) this needs to be done before the cabinet can be reassembled. only when the cabinet is all back together can all the working distribution fibres be reblown to the houses and spliced back in at the ETPs

Am I reading too much into this if I ask if the Yr3 cabinets will be different?
Are all UFB cabinets above ground?
