Thanks to your very clear explanation I do now. The stopper for me then isn't the cost of the GPON port, rather the fact that the cost of the backhaul from it couldn't be shared around 23 other users. Paying monthly for all of that or a P2P is beyond what is sensible for my needs. Sad when a dream dies though! ;-)

Wireless is iffy for me (too many trees) so will continue to hope they cabinetise the copper one day.

That may be able to be resolved with the right antennas and equipment - perhaps start a new thread with a few more details to test the feasibility...

What part of the country are you?

Just at a guess I would say he is at Wyndam Letterbox Rd - Southland - http://www.mapleglen.co.nz/mapleglen.kmz

and copperwise their line would be fed from WYD to WYD/A to WYD/C and the cabinets apear to be at this stage direct copper feeds (no PCM or Conklins etc)

Yeah, that's me. Currently using Woosh wireless. The tower is only a couple of k away but the connection is unreliable and very slow. Sell my kidneys to Farmside for three years is about the only other option I guess...
On the topic of the original beatup^H^H^H "story". Wait one year, the flax bush visible in the photo will swallow it. I know these things. :-)

Problem with that is that to install new connections the flax bush would have to be cut or held back to allow for the lid to be removed and to maintain a relative sterial area

This type of sensationalist reporting, complete with camera angles that increase the perceived size of the 'pillar'/'edifice' annoys the hell out of me. It's not much higher than the retaining wall that is directly behind it and it is probably going to be hidden by the flax bush once it grows?? As far as NIMBY goes, are we plumbing new depths?

The street is not that far from me, but we still have a few months to wait until they start laying the ducting. I can't understand their concern, in their position I'd just be happy to be getting UFB access - it's not like it's a great bloody cabinet either.

I would love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code

I somewhat agree that these things are ugly, if or ever UFB ends up in my street, I believe circa 2020 is a remote possibility, that will mean we will have a black box, a green metal box approx 1 Meter high. A grey pole and a green upturned rubbish like thing at the gate.

Grateful that we have underground services and not in an area with those ugly incredibly thick saving VF cable clogging the scenery.

Funny they complain about a something that's kind of small and not that bad.
Maybe Chorus should remove that and place a Whisper Cabinet in.

When they started to pop up we never saw people complain about them
