Dont buy a NAS, Get a file server

I thought they were the same thing, looks like I'm going to have to hit Google and do some research.

File server = Junk PC with lots of drives.
NAS = Expensive piece of slow transfer storage device.

A bit off topic... In any case both a file server and a NAS have their place. If I didn't want to run Hyper-V specifically I would be happy with a NAS. In general modern NAS appliances aren't "slow transfer storage devices". Most of the NAS models I had around here lately are as fast as my HP Microserver when it comes to file transfer.

In timA's specific case he discussed his "NAS" before and we came to the conclusion it was an old underpowered, low memory, low throughput network interface NAS. So one NAS experience doesn't mean all NAS models behave like that.

Now back on Vodafone vs Telecom.

Well said sir!
I have not had bad experiences with all NAS devices but a lot suffer the same fate.
Vodafone is better too as you get 1 free month on sign up last time i checked.

Telecom get a free month and a $50 credit I see on their website.

Telecom - just buy a Gigabit switch, they're cheap.

Gonna have to join the Orcon reps in this thread! Joined a couple months ago on a 100/50 unlimited plan, and have experienced no noticable slowdowns. It's 20:00 now, just did a speedtest:

Can't complain about that.

I wonder why they always lose to Snap in the truenet download tests? At least they tend to win in webpage download and latency.

My problem is the price, $119 for VDSL is expensive compared to Telecom and Vodafone.

Truenet needs to test VDSL providers on a percentage of average off peak throughput. It varies too much otherwise and you cant compare a 22Mbp/s line with a 65Mbp/s line.

Hi Tim,  What do you mean?  We do exactly that - see Chart 6 of https://www.truenet.co.nz/articles/march-2014-broadband-report

It depends whether you want an un-shaped truly Unlimited plan with no fair use policy. If you do then....

I was just saying, Vodafone Unlimited VDSL is $109 and Telecoms is $119. But if you have a telecom mobile account then go for it

plambrechtsen: Telecom 'cause we are awesome.

Here was me thinking that you'd say, 'cause we sparkle!

I'd go with Telecom - better the devil you know than the devil you don't.

If you are with a provider already, are happy with the service, and the value for money is acceptable to you, then certainly no reason to change.

We recently changed from the devil we knew for a lifetime (Telecom) to the devil we didn't (Vodafone) and couldn't be happier with the service and end product, all at a cheaper price, and in a package that will save us more money on calling.

Call wait times are similar at both, and I do like the VF callback service.  I for one am quite happy having some traffic shaping to restrict the data hogs who download terabytes "just because they can", so streaming, Skype, business use, and other stereotypical internet uses remain at a good speed.  Mind you both do that to some degree AFAIK.

Each to their own.  Identify what is important to you, and choose a provider that best meets your requirements.  I for one would have no hesitation signing up with either company.  But currently value for money is my main criteria, and VF came out on top for that.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation
