UFB fibre up to 200 Mbps between Jul-2017 and Jun-2018

It's nice to have a date, not so nice that the date is so far in the future.

I swear they're avoiding me. I live on High Street in Lower Hutt, and there's fibre 400m away each way. There's a circle in the middle where my house unfortunately is with no fibre. 2017/18 is a long way away. At least we have Vodafone Cable, but still.

Well, we are on the map at least now. We were just blank before. Just down the road is getting Fibre as we speak, but nothing for us up the hill until 2016 at least. Oh well, I didn't want to stream movies and TV anyway

They are installing UFB in many streets around here at the moment, including the one at the end of our street. Buoyed by this, I entered in our street...

"UFB fibre up to 200 Mbps between Jul-2019 and Jun-2020"

UFB finished being installed all around me, owait June 2018. I'm not going to be here by then, what a waste of waiting.

I've started writing letters to a few MPs questioning the schedule of Chorus' rollout and whether they're making best use of the public's money, after checking quite a few areas at random they seem to be doing the areas that already have VDSL first and the ADSL areas last. I'm writing to Dunedin North's MP, 2x list MPs and the Minister for Communications. It won't accomplish anything but at least I feel like I've done something.

UFB fibre up to 200 Mbps between Jul-2018 and Jun-2019 - yet either side of us has it being laid now within spitting distance....

I'm directly between two currently covered schools, and they coiled up heaps of fibre in a cabinet 30 metres from my house, and I'm July 2019 to June 2020. And I work for a fibre-only ISP that can't serve me until then.

I feel your pain.

You're very correct, but very wrong if you think you're onto something.

Somewhere in the vicinity of 50% of NZ premises can get VDSL2 now and the figure getting ADSL2+ is now well over 85% with RBI.

Only 70% will get UFB so logic would dictate that yes, people who can get VDSL2 will get UFB. It's nothing to do with the rollout, it's simple statistics.

If you're suggesting that areas are being cherry picked to deliver faster speeds, much like the claims people are making with cable, I'd have to ask exactly how you'd see that being logical?

With the exception of initially focussing on business areas, it appears to be the exact opposite in Whakatane; most of the completed areas only had ADSL. I'm in an ADSL-only area myself and UFB is coming any day now.

I make no claims about areas being cherry picked (and I agree with you regarding cable, they'd want to be competing), I have no idea how they've decided which areas are done first. I'm only going by my local area and most of the parts that are VDSL capable are getting UFB first (apart from small pockets who are just outside of VDSL range). Whether this is because it's easier to do those parts or they've picked areas out of a hat I don't know, but I might get an answer if I start questioning. While I don't believe there has been cherry picking I think there should be, they should be doing areas that have slow speeds first which is the main point of the letters I've sent. As you say 50% of NZ premises can get VDSL and they've done the school and business areas, why not focus on those outside of those areas?

But if you've got Vodafone cable that's all you need don't you??

I haven't had very good experience with Vodafone – their customer service is hopeless. Also from what I've hear UFB is a better service. I'm moving as soon as it's available.

Do you really want to wait 3 years for UFB?
VF service is reportedly cr*p but cable is a hell a lot better than xDSL.
I've been on cable for 2 years, and am happy with it.
I have never needed VF service, fortunately.

Are you cutting off your nose to spite your face?

5Mbps ADSL (we are literally the last house on an exchange boundary)

Time to move once the wife goes back to work.

I'm fairly sure that in Miramar the areas around Weta were definitely destined to be built first before others plus Seatoun which is a far wealthier suburb than Strathmore. To me the focus in the Miramar area is around the business areas first, then the wealthy suburb who already has VDSL then the rest. It's not to say that I am ungrateful that I will be getting UFB in 2016/7. It's just hard for me to not see prioritisation has occurred to deliver UFB to some areas sooner than others. So I sit on ADSL, and have to recommend to my neighbors to go to Vodafone Cable if they wanted higher speed internet.

Edit. with the UFB Build on the left and VDSL on the right. Dark pink on the left is build 2014/5. Then light pink is 2015/6 and yellow is 2016/7. I'm in the middle of the white no VDSL area so only have ADSL until 2016/7. And you can see the UFB build has been focused on the Weta business district and the airport which is primarily the pink strip on the left. Not to say I am unhappy, but it is what it is in regards to the focus.
