Well, I for one am really happy Dunedin won. I'm currently on 100/50 plan ($129) with Orcon, so to have that increased ten times to 1000/500 plan ($95) for significantly less money, is simply awesome. Finally in the same league as Europe.

It's a good thing I have SSDs in my machines to cope with these speeds, probably time to start looking at upgrading my local area network to 10Gbit with a few INTEL 10GbE X540-T1 NICs to keep the network speeds proportional. :-)

A few data transfer numbers for 1Gbit connection to put things in perspective:

113 MB/s   =   6.6 GB/min   =   400 GB/h   =   9.3 TB/day   =   288 TB/month

Have to say it will feel good when people boast about their "high" 200GB caps to come back and say: "Well, it's not as good as my 288TB cap." :-)

I see on the Vodafone community they are saying they won't be offering Gigabit internet in Dunedin

"...the internet cant really go much faster for now"... really? well not if you don't offer any faster plans it wont. I thought the idea of Dunedin Businesses and homes all connected together and able to share files and video around between them was the point (ok marketing was the point, but you know what I mean)

I guess just another reason why people should move away from Vodafone as Internet Service Provider. They're easily the worst in the country in terms of network performance, and in a very consistent manner.

To be fair they've already got issues with bandwidth outside their own network. What's the point of trying to sell Gbit when they can't even provide a true 70mbit connection. It be would be just asking for speed complaints

Oh ok maybe I could rewrite their blurb then; to be fair.
"Sorry, our stuff is a little bit crap at the moment... once we get enough bad publicity we might upgrade" or is that a little harshinnocent

ADKM: Well, Dunedin may have won Gigatown but Chorus are "rolling out" fibre as planned regardless who won. For Dunedin that's even slower than the Caversham motorway, so how many years before anything changes?

Not sure I'd agree looking at the coverage map on the Chorus site. It's not exactly a quick product to install, but they are doing pretty well.

Outwhat?
The only way you are ever going to get fibre is to somehow convince Outram school to give you wi-fi access to their connection....
