The winner of the Gigatown competition is... Dunedin!

These are a few press releases from ISP and telcos with some plans:

Orcon:

Orcon today announced its residential and business Gigatown launch plans. The residential launch offer includes personal account managed installation support as well as a free Roku 3 TV streaming player so Gigatown residents can make the most out of their lightening fast internet.

Orcon general manager Mike Shirley congratulates the winning town; “We are super excited to be involved with this amazing opportunity to see the true potential of first world internet.

“The chosen Gigatown will now have incredible internet speed so we wanted to match that with incredible plans and services,” says Mr Shirley.

The residential Orcon 1Gbps plans start at $85 per month for 100GB and $95 a month for Unlimited; and those who sign up for 24 months will also receive a free Roku 3 Streaming Player worth $150. The new business plans start at $100 excl GST per month for 100GB and $110 excl GST for Unlimited. Residential plans are available for presale at orcon.net.nz/gigatown from Thursday 27 November.

“Three out of four Orcon customers wish to stream content online rather than downloading content or watching traditional TV*. Being able to provide the fantastic Roku 3 streaming device along with Global Mode to customers will revolutionise the way people watch TV in their lounges.

“It means customers will not only have access to a world of content, but they’ll be able to stream as much TV and movies as they want in HD,” says Shirley.

Gigatown Orcon residential customers will also be first to experience Orcon+, the new premium service offering which includes an account manager to assist during the install process. Gigatown marks the beginning of a full service upgrade for all Orcon customers over the coming 12 months.

“We’re committed to having the most premium service experience in New Zealand to match our premium products. Gigatown’s future focus is an excellent launch pad for this upgrade. Customers will see significant service innovation launched during 2015.

“Not only are we able to offer these great plans with unparalleled service to Gigatown residents, but Orcon is continuing its commitment to not throttle or have a traffic management policy for residential customers**. This is helped by our partnership with Alcatel-Lucent in developing new Broadband Network Gateway (BNG) capability to support Gigatown.

“Gigatown is a great opportunity for innovative companies like Orcon and the potential is really exciting. We’re passionate about providing first world internet to Kiwis and looking forward to setting up the first Gigatown customer in early 2015,” concludes Shirley.

Residential Gigatown customers can sign up from Thursday 27 November 2014 at Orcon.co.nz/gigatown so they can benefit from 1Gbps service as soon as possible. Business plans will be available for sale in the New Year.

Snap:

Snap is celebrating Dunedin winning Chorus’ Gigatown competition by offering the town its ultra-high speed internet on an unlimited basis at a super low price. The exclusive offer to Dunedin is designed so local consumers and businesses can bring the ideas in their Gigaplan to life.

Snap’s high performance network, regarded as one of the fastest in New Zealand, already supports fibre services that deliver speeds of up to 200Mbps in Dunedin. By offering a genuinely unlimited service, Snap is helping kick start Dunedin fibre-enabled future while waiting for its Gigabit connection, expected in February or March 2015.

Once Chorus makes the Gigatown specification available, customers will be automatically switched to the new service.

The offer is available exclusively to homes and businesses in Dunedin.

  • Lightwave Home Ultimate: $99 per month including GST for unlimited data and a free premium modem with the latest ac wireless technology, plus phone service, which includes voicemail, caller ID and call waiting.
  • Lightwave Business Ultimate: $119 per month plus GST for unlimited data and a free premium modem with the latest ac wireless technology.
Because ultra-fast fibre plans require better hardware than the standard routers most ISPs ship to their customers, a free high speed ac wireless device will be included for new customers joining either Ultimate fibre plan for two years. The AVM 7490 modem is capable of delivering more than 200Mbps over a wireless connection as well as close to Gigabit speeds over a wired connection.

All of Snap’s broadband and fibre plans are delivered without rate shaping, traffic management and fair usage restrictions, giving customers the best possible internet experience.

Chorus Chief Commercial Officer, Tim Harris, says: “We’re delighted to welcome Snap into the Gigatown family of service providers. It’s great to see that Snap shares our enthusiasm for Gigatown and the potential of ultra-fast broadband to create social and economic opportunities for New Zealand.”

“We are as excited as the people of Dunedin about the possibilities offered through ultra high speed, unlimited internet to increase high value jobs and exports, and create more inclusive, connected communities. This offer recognises the creativity, energy and commitment put into winning the Gigatown competition and will help continue the momentum towards their fibre-enabled goals,” says James Koers, general manager, Snap Retail. “Snap looks forward to following Dunedin’s progress as we all learn how to reap the benefits from greater adoption of truly high speed, unlimited internet services.”

WIC:

Wicked Networks is overjoyed at the announcement of Dunedin as the winner of the year-long Chorus Gigatown competition. The hard work, determination and above all, Southern honesty of the volunters who drove the Dunedin campaign is worthy of great admiration.
As a locally-owned and operated Internet Service Provider, Wicked Networks is able to announce today its plans for deployment of gigabit Internet services for residential and business customers in the Dunedin coverage area.

1. Wicked Networks will immediately upgrade all UFB ports within its customer access network to gigabit capability. This provides all customers with the immediate local benefit of gigabit connectivity, regardless of their Internet plan.

2. As a provider of unlimited Internet for 10 years, Wicked Networks is proud to confirm that all gigabit residential and business services will be for unlimited data.

3. Wicked Networks will also immediately upgrade all existing UFB business customers onto gigabit Internet plans at the standard business pricing below. We recognize the long-term support of our business customers and are pleased to offer them enhanced service in return.

4. Wicked Networks will also offer upgrades to all hotspot hosts within its Dunedin UFB network to provide gigabit wireless capability. Currently available at over 50 individual locations, Wicked Networks wireless hotspots are used by up to 30,000 individuals annually.

Finally, Wicked Networks welcomes Orcon, My Republic and other gigabit providers to Dunedin. We are confident that strong competition is essential in the New Zealand market and yields clear benefits to consumers. Wicked Networks also strongly encourages all UFB providers in Dunedin to establish local peering links, so as to maximise those benefits for gigabit customers.

Will be interesting. I haven't noticed the difference going from 100Mbit -> 200Mbit, there will be very little that you can max out 1Gbps on.

I assume Whangarei wasn't even in the running since we are NorthPower fibre not Chorus?

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Don't believe so.
Which is sad. I could actually have a use for a 1gbps download link. ;)

They're saying "lightening fast internet", but that means that the internet will be as fast as the process of changing from a darker shade of colour to a lighter one. Does anyone know how fast this process is? Because if it's as slow as my recycling bin faded in the sun, I'm not that impressed by the speeds offered by gigabit internet.

I think Timaru or Dunedin. I'm hoping Timaru! Growing south Canterbury town who deserve it

They have a meme about how Timaru already has a lot of fibre rolled out where as Wanaka doesn't

Does it really matter, I'm guessing that it will not be that long until Chorus thinks about provisioning gigabit service across its network

( although from what I understand its all a bit of a con anyway as while you can offer a mex of 1Gbs, you cannot guarantee more than 100mbs downstream as you are restrcited by the 2.4Gbs GPON being served to up to 24 connections )

I will be glad it is over. I never really understood what it was all about, apart from just marketing hype. I guess it was pretty good free marketing for them, but I can't see too much of  a reward for the winning town for the average internet user, considering all the hype it had. Many of us still haven't got fibre, and many of NZ small towns and rural areas may not get it for many many years, and will be stuck with ADSL, or almost dialup like speeds.

5.95 million tweets in 12 months - about 16,000 a day (or something like that).

That was too much.
