My guess is, at the time the phone network was being rolled out (in the 50s and 60s) copper was the best, cheapest available. Fibre (if it was there) probably cost a fortune.

I would also guess, at the time, 0 consideration was made to those same copper lines one day being used for internet/data transfer, I'd say the only concern at the time was for voice services.

And it would cost a fortune to re-lay all that cable. I would expect your landline/internet bills to skyrocket if they were to redo the entire country.

It is a bad assumption to make in that, just because a new division gets fibre, everyone should have it. That is the best time to get the new network all rolled out.

 

 

 

I disagree that UFB is required for tourists, Personally when i go around places i'll generally pickup a local sim. Outside of NZ, 95% of the time that has offered me both a lack of filtering on my connection and faster speeds.

 

UFB2 will come around, but remember if it is chorus doing the UFB2 rollout, they still need to finish their rollout first. Otherwise they will be splitting their resources even more.

 

 

 

For Slow ADSL, or cabinets which aren't upgraded, Lodge slow speed tickets with your ISP, they will put it through to chorus which is a metric chorus use for rating where they spend on RBI Upgrades next.

 

 

 

Marketing can stand up and say, we are doing UFB2 from X Date, but realistically all that will do is cause more stress on the system.

 

 

 

If i was you, I would look into the likes of Unison, they arent a CFH provider, They now do offer UFB in their coverage. Maybe your local will take up that example and also do it.
Personally, this route is my preferred move for rural areas. Likely the local lines company will be doing upgrades at some point, lay fibre while they are at it and two birds with one stone. It's simply about that seed being picked up and ran with.

 

 Don't think i'm against the idea of getting fibre, I agree. I would love fibre out here, just short of VDSL range by the length of the driveway - That's Rural life though.

 

No I disagree.... already having fibre in two new subdivisions is an excellent case to install it through out the rest of town here in my view... Also its been awhile since I did much travelling but having a fibre speed level available would have been alot better than the slow speeds I had available back then....these days tourists take photos and videos they want to put online and you do need the fibre speeds to do this ok now...also its a good selling point.....so in my view tourists do in fact need and use the faster speeds available from fibre...

 As far as Chorus is concerned I see the UFB and UFB2 as just part of their whole project they and a couple of other companies have contracted to do....

 I believe we need to remember that "Animal Farm" (the more equal than others idea)  was a story and that in real life we all are entitled to UFB even in the regions outside of Auckland....(LOL ex Jaffa here)   that is not rural life these days...its actually getting the new available tech etc which cuts across the old dated rural/town divides of times gone by.. .we pay taxes as well here....Rgds  Laurie

no it doesn't, new build areas get it because that dont get copper. that has zero impact if the rest of the community gets it.

And 25 families, how cute, Auckland the the surrounding areas probably get that number daily. some of the outlying areas which are getting infill housing need it too.

While not the update you are expecting i'm sure, movement on chorus's side have started up again for RBI upgrades.

Big factor being the push towards making use of Fibre that is marked as available for RBI. 

This ofcourse is no new news, it is still the project that started a few years ago, however often after chorus pushes out, RSPs do follow through with their own marketing speak.

"Cute"   come on   this isn't about Auckland but a region that was promised a decision on UFB2 over a year ago now.....I don't believe it takes that long to at least confirm which one is going to get UFB2 then.... advise when the contracts have been finalized etc....there is something "off" with this delay in my view....

Also yes we all know copper is not installed these days.. my point is that having two subdivisions (plus local schools/medical and the hospital in Clyde)  here in Alex getting fibre as normal means its a normal business plan to use that as seeding points to spread it out around town/s here in Central... standard business logic...

I have read the new thread about the Greens querying the delay and the article in Stuff....and agree... the Govt is mucking this region around with this silly nonsense of a  delay..in my view....

So... the Govt needs to get on with this UFB2 project stop dilly dallying so people and business here in Central and elsewhere in  New Zealand can get on with using fibre internet connections...now. today etc...#getonwithit

Thanks to Steve Biddle and Jase?? on the Rural wireless thread I got to this part of the Chorus address checking site... and found this rather odd track of fibre over the back rural 10 acre block area of town here...Fudge cant figure out how Geekzone lets (??) you load in an image...it seems to discourage this action...?? no "Browse" to the file on your PC..routine..

Anyway its along from Henderson Drive (newish subdivision) Nth along SH8... right onto Airport Rd....1st right Airport Rd again.. left onto Dunstan Rd....Nth... then left onto Springvale Rd.... and then right onto Waikerikeri Valley Rd...and stops!!...

I would e interested in what Steve Biddle can advise etc....

Surprisingly it doesnt show any fibre going to Dunstan Hospital, which doesnt seem correct..??

Mmmm just checked on a recent article in the local newspaper The News    http://www.thenews.co.nz/news/broadband-speed-up-due-to-upgrade/ and I see they upgraded a cabinet in Sprinvale Rd.....Laurie
