<snip>  I personally am on an unlimited plan but have no idea of what my usage is as it isn't shown by the ISP. But I imagine my usage is under 2 GB a day, but I guess it will be growing.

You are almost certainly underestimating your usage ...

see: 100GB is the new normal

How can you possibly suggest that without knowing what he is doing ? LOL

I did say "almost".  smile

Simple probability.
The vast majority of UFB users - including me - use a lot more data than they think.
That's why so many users have left the old 80GB plans, after being burnt by overage charges.

Even though I am on an "unlimited" plan, my ISP still measures my usage, and I am often surprised by how big the numbers are.
Personally I think that all ISPs should meter their users - it wouldn't cost them anything to do it.

Thanks to all for your responses, I am really not wanting to make a big song and dance about the whole thing - I certainly understand the issue from a business perspective that if a customer is costing you money then you're better off not to have them. The issues to me are no warning and 7 days to move.

Will certainly be having discussions with the teenager regarding the extreme data usage and if to comes to it i'll remind him about the old 'jet stream' days by limiting his connection to 256kbps.

Whats the issue with 7 days? In this day and age 7 days is plenty of time, I've had same day churn on dsl before (late 2014 mind you). Number porting should be 2-3 days tops and picking a provider is not that hard these days with the compare sites and truenet testing. Moving ISP's for a intact dsl and phone line should be an easy 3-4 day move - maybe quicker given the LSP is expecting a port request and whatnot

Couldn't disagree more.

Some of us have real lives, other priorities and a week wizzes away pretty damn quickly, ESP if you have teenagers.

Do you think HD would have accepted 7 days notice of NOT PAYING YOUR BILL?!

Pfft, my 1st ADSL connection was 128k.........   if you really want to show him the old days, give him a 14" screen and rate limit to 2400bps. ;) Oh, and a 8 color Windows scheme ;)

You dont have 30-60minutes in a single week to have a quick google around and online signup? , I mean I just used broadbandcompare right now in 3 minutes to pick the ISP that gives me unlimited with no contract for $79 at my address

And actually i would expect restricted service/soft disconnect if i dont pay a bill within 7 days. Real life or not this isn't car/house/holiday shopping, It's not hard

We had a ZX Spectrum + at my school, circa 1986 I think (after Sinclair went belly-up).

It seems amazing to me that you think your average lay person can find and make a decision (or should have to) on a new provider or plan in 30-60 minutes! Your dismissive attitude to this seems mind boggling (and suspicious).

If you rang HD and told them you were moving providers in 7 days, you better believe they would charge you the full month (A FULL months notice is what almost every ISP in NZ requires). Contracts work both ways, so at the very least they should have given him a month.

If you know of an ISP in NZ that will accept 7 days notice for changing provider, I'd like to hear about it.

Regardless, the lack of warning was pretty poor, no opportunity for a change of behaviour or discussion around non-intentional but fixable issue to be remedied. Shows the motivation pretty clearly.

Assuming that this number is correctly quoted, 200GB per month is a ridiculously low limit - just twice the national average of 100GB per month.

EDIT:  Just a thought - shifted decimal point - 2000GB?

I don't normally actively encourage such things, but to me, this seems like a ComCom issue clear as day.

So seeing as most ISP's offering unlimited don't tell you your usage, would anyone know of / be able to recommend any kind of downloadable usage monitor that would be easy to use for un-geeks like me ?

It only really matters if this sort of thing comes up.
So far, 'unlimited onternet' seem to be the only ISP offering unlimited internet that isn't actually unlimited internet .
(What a funny sentence!)
I haven't seen reports of any other ISP cutting customers off for using too much, and you can bet that sort of thing would be heavily discussed on here if it happened.

Really, they should have thought through their name a lot better :)
