If you are 1.1km from the Exchange you dont need to be on a cabinet you will remain on the Khandalla MDF and get good DSL performance, no cabinet needed.

Cabinets are only needed for lines on a particular exchange that are in excess of 2.5km in length. If your cable length is less than this then you will remain on the main MDF connected to the ISAM/DSLAM within the main exchange.

Khandalla exchange is near Simla Cres station, if you are with 1.5-2km of that then you will most likely remain connected directly to that MDF which already has been upgraded to a ADSL2+ ISAM.

It still missing some cabniets i would of thought needed upgrading for adsl2+. There is alteast one exchange that needs broadband ( or Cabneit not sure What telecom call it now they have changed it few times )

Cyril - Any guesses why i can't get higher than around 10mbit on my cabinet? I usually average 8mbit but if i download of a fast server i can only only make 10mbit. My sync is 19675 Kbps on a RTA1025w in ADSL2+ mode, on a cabinet recently installed.
Even with a download manager splitting into 10 parts off Akamai downloading XP SP3 redist just now i can only make 10.8mbit. It doesn't matter where it's from, thats the fastest speed i can make, which is nice, but it would be better if my line could go almost twice as fast.
Telstraclear confirmed i am on a FS/FS ADSL2+ profile.
I used Speedguide's TCP optimizer set to 20mbit, yet it made no difference. Any guesses to what would cause this?

Hi eXdee, your sync speed is what you will get (or with in 80% of with IP and ATM overhead) between you and the ISAM/DSLAM port, what happens beyond that is dependant on all manner of things. I would suggest that your ISP may infact be performing a per port limit (not that they would tell you that) which pulls in around 10Mb/s according to your observations.

As most ISPs currently dont acknowledge DSL2+ as a service (not offically launched) they have no reason to give you more than what a DSL1 port would give at full chat.

I must live right round the corner from you.

I'm in Pukete too. Sadly though I'm with Orcon on there Max/Max plan also and getting terrible sppeds and latency... particularly gaming on International Servers. Its very interesting seeing your line speed with Telstra compared to mine. I see all these chorus vans around our streets and know little about what they are doing? I'm at my witts end and ready to leave Orcon as my ISP. Can you help me? Do you recommend Telstra? I have Home Phoneline, Tolls and Max/Max broadband with Orcon...should I move to Telstra for better speeds and Service? I use a Dynalink RTA 1335 4 port modem/router which looks like you use the same brand at least. These are my results....

dgashby: I checked the Khandallah area polygons in Google Earth against the original shape files as downloaded from the Chorus web site and viewed in a commercial GIS, and for that area at least there doesn't appear to be any diffrence between the files. Also checked this against the Aug08 spreadsheet available on the Chorus page and this appears to match up OK too. All the KNH/* cabinets listed in the spreadsheet are present on the map.

I'm happy to double check some other areas if people let me know where.

A great tool, well done. A question, every cabinet in Auckland I have clicked on seems to be scheduled for deployment on the 8/5/2008, is this correct, or simply when you populated your database ?!?!?!

AFAIK 8/5/2008 is the date Chorus published or compiled the data. For details of a particular cabinet you need to cross-reference the cabinet ID with the spreadsheet also available on the Chorus site.

So if my exchange isn't even listed on the spreadsheet anywhere then I would assume cabinetization is 3+ years on the horizon.

That sounds right as Broadband only got here Sept 07.

Another possibility is that you are already within close proximity (~2km, I'm not sure of the exact distances Chorus are using) of an actual exchange and so there is less gain to be made from cabinetising your location. Chorus' main focus seems to be on delivering faster broadband to towns with 500 or more phone lines.

I'm a little out in the sticks away from any town but I do get decent modem stats (see below) so I assume we are reasonably close to our exchange which is WLD in the Tasman Disrict (South Island).

I doubt we are in line for any cabinetization plans as we only had broadband available for a year now and the rest of the Nelson and Tasman region with higher population desities will be far ahead of us in upgrade plans.

Based on my waiting for broadband which started in 2002 and took five and a half years to get here I'd say 2014 sounds about right for any further speed increases. I'll be long gone from NZ by then... or dead. :)

next to the moon, with an attenuation of 25dB you are around 1.8-2km from the DSLAM so you dont qualify for being cabnetised.

Infact because your attenuation and S/N is so good your modem appears to be connecting north of the normal 8Mb/s that G.DMT (G.992.1) normally limits at. Technically G.DMT can go to 12Mb/s but normal profiles limit it to 7.6Mb/s or there abouts, so unless you are acutally connected to a ADSL2+ port then you are doing very well. If it was a 2+ port then with those stats you should expect 16-18Mb/s.

A lot of recently upgraded rural areas are not on the cabnetisation plan due to their recent upgrades, which is the situtaion you are in, however homes further out than you may be.

Yes. My stats look pretty good for being 12 km away or so from civilization. I must be lucky enough to have an exchange near me in the trees somewhere. :) Saying all that... you would have thought since they only made ADSL available last September here that they would have just jumped up to ADSL2+ to start with but I suppose that's too logical. :)

Well, not necessary. It is known that they are redeploying the old ADSL1 gear from us in the big smoke, where we have had our gear upgraded. Let's hope ya didn't get my old Titirangi gear lol
