OzoneNZ:

If you're after some inspiration, this is what I'm using now in preparation for HyperFibre.

All 10G-ready aside from the router.

- Mikrotik RB3011; last remaining part of 1G-only gear I have, will have to be replaced with something that has at least 2x SFP+ cages

- Mikrotik CRS328 - really great to have the 10G trunk ports for servers / other 10G switches

- Mikrotik CRS305 - sits on my desk for PCs / laptops / etc. 4x SFP+ cages for 10G goodness

- Mellanox ConnectX-2 cards - really cheap way to add 10G capability to a PC, can be found on eBay for next to nothing

Mostly using 10G-SR SFP+ optics from FiberStore and Cisco DAC cables to connect everything up

Very nice setup mate, great job at keeping it tidy! you have slightly motivated me to tidy mine up 🙃

I 10gig'd my home network last year using an 8x sfp+ mikrotik switch, some 10gb mellanox network cards, a mixture of 10GTek DAC cables and 10GTek rj45 > SFP+ transceivers and it came in at about $750~

Wow, that's way cheaper than I thought!

I've always been a little wary of the mikrotik stuff myself; 'you get what you paid for' etc, but maybe it's time to take another look.

I need 2 switches because they're in 2 different places in the house.

They're quite well respected as a brand and been been around for ages

if you decided to push go, keep us posted as budget of up to 2k will get you a pretty decent home setup

Cheers dude! Lots of work over the last few years and a few lucky opportunities to pick gear up for cheap haha.

SamF:

Very nice!

And you even cabled it proper! :D

Good work!

What will the cost of the entire setup be once it's done (if you don't mind sharing)?

I really hate that you made me sit down and think the grand total 😞, but here goes:

- MikroTik CRS305-1G-4S+IN (10G desktop switch) - $256

- MikroTik CRS328-24P-4S+RM (10G + POE / rack switch) - $592

- 10G-SR SFP+ optics + multi-mode OM3 cable (between desktop / rack switches) - $80

- MikroTik RB3011 (not 10G capable) - $309

And the other not-strictly-networking gear:

- Dell R710 (2x Xeon X5660 6 core, 72GB RAM, 5x 2TB HDDs, 2x 256GB SSDs) - $200 from a TradeMe auction, ex-Auckland University equipment haha!

- Emerson GXT2-1000 UPS - free from a previous workplace that didn't know its worth and didn't want it 😁, probably ~$2k+ new in its day since its a double-conversion pure sine wave unit. Just needed new batteries.

The only part of finishing the complete 10G upgrade left is the rather prohibitive cost of 10G routers, something like the MikroTik CCR2004-1G-12S+2XS with at least two SFP+ ports and the routing horsepower to match. I'd love to get an RB4011 and call it a day, but that would only be good for the use-case of having a 10G outbound connection and then offering multiple clients uncontended Gigabit connections, whereas I'm keen to have 4Gbit HyperFibre this year (and 10G whenever that is offered) but be able to use it all on my desktop.

On a side note I really rate the MikroTik platform and hardware, but if you're not prepared to put the learning in it's definitely not the right thing to get - they will do just about anything the more enterprise-grade brands can do (Cisco etc.) but the configuration really is a steep learning curve.

Heh, well there are 4 gamers in this household, plus we are all heavy users of streaming video, plus I run a number of servers from home, plus I work on the net all day, plus I upload large amounts of data regularly...

So yeah, I DO need all the bandwidth I can get!

Plus... I like big bits and I cannot lie... :D

So you are the 1% of the people with a gig plan that ACTUALLY needs it.

you can get 10gbps fibre right now! google HSNS pricing :)

This is silly. You can wait a short period of time for upload. If you really think you need it and want to throw good money after bad then:

1) You can purchase bitstream 3 1000/1000

2) Hyperfibre.

One option is to grab a 1U server off TradeMe (R210 ii or R320?), put a dual port 10G card in it, and install pfSense or VYOS. You might not get 10G throughput but certainly a good chunk of it.

few good 10gb hack jobs on the netgate forums that come in relatively affordable

@OzoneNZ very nice setup. I am looking to buy a MikroTik CRS328-24P-4S+RM to complete my local 10G setup and that it supports both passive and active PoE on all 24 ports automatically for multiple different voltages which is amazing. Where did you manage to buy this for $592 in NZ?

I can buy it from eurodk incl shipping for NZD $585 providing it does not gets pinged further with GST at border.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Wow I can see why you asked, didn't realise they went for ~$750 NZD locally now!

I purchased mine back in August 2018 from Ascent Technology, I'm guessing the CRS328 price has spiked up since then due to the poorer exchange rates these days

Damn, came back to this thread to ask where you bought yours. Have been thinking about getting some Mikrotik 10G gear for home as I'm upgrading to Gbit and want to get 10G between servers and workstation. Guess I'll be asking for a quote from PBTech, but don't expect much of a discount.

For what it’s worth I think most MikroTik hardware in NZ is sourced by GoWiFi in Christchurch, so you might have better luck asking there. Not too sure on how PB Tech acquires their MikroTik stuff but wouldn’t be surprised if it comes from GoWiFi too.

I know Ascent definitely fulfils their orders via GoWiFi since my CRS328 was shipped from Rangioria/Christchurch, for some strange reason Ascent’s pricing was usually $50 or so less than GoWiFi direct.
